Dropping out of X-Server Crashes system. [SOLVED]

Postby GeneC » 16 Mar 2013 12:20

Just installed SMXI on my SolydX-64 tracking Debian SID system.
Using CRTL+ALT+F1 (as I always had before) does not drop me out of the desktop to a CLI, but nothing but a black screen? No prompt, nothing. Blank, empty screen. No key combination that I try, does anything.

I re-installed a clone before SMXI, and same thing. So its not SMXI, but some other problem. I do not have this issue on any other Debian based install (LMDE, LMDE converted to SolydX).

I have tried CRTL+ALT+(all the functions keys) = no cli.. :?

hi Gene :P
not too sure, but i would say that there's some relation between the nvidia drivers and plymouth (this would be my first bet)

i tried it now and Crtl Alt F1 dumps me to tty1 from where i startx normally

Hi 'zz'.... :)

I have done some research (Google) and found that nomodeset was missing from etc/default/grub. It may have been removed in update from SolydXK repo to SID?
Sounds like:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1473045
solution:
1) In file /etc/default/grub, I changed:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"
2) Then run sudo update-grub.
3) Then restart.
In any event I made the changes above and it still does not work, back to the drawing board... :?

Yep!... :)

The new Nvidia (304.84) from SID was buggy. (At least on my system).

I upgraded to 313.18-2 from Debian Experimental and that fixed it.

Ran SMXI and installed latest Liquorix Kernel, and Nvidia
