amd64 ?

Postby hillbillygreg » 13 Jan 2014 03:30

I just installled solydk on my dell latitude d630, which I'm sure you all know is an intel chipset.
I'm positive I downloaded the correct iso for production 64bit. But when I run uname -r I get 3.11-2-amd64
uname -a gives me 3.11-2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.11.8-1 (2013-11-13) x86_64 GNU/Linux
how can this be ? by the way I'm no expert, it just seems odd that an os designed for amd will run on an intel chip,
so far everything seems to work well, except for update manager, but apt-get works great as usual, lol

The 64-bit CPU architecture used by most Intel and AMD cpus was originally introduced by AMD. It is known either as X86_64 or AMD64. Same thing either way.....

Historically, AMD's 64 bit specification won out. Intel had i64. AMD's was based on 32 bit architecture which as a side effect, allows 32 bit apps run on 64bit.
