[solved]Chromium Flash not working after October update

Postby lappets » 16 Oct 2014 20:01

Flash player is not working after updating to the latest October 2014 release.
chrome://plugins/ reveals no plugin is loaded
When I try to install pepperflashplugin-nonfree I receive this error message :

ERROR: wget failed to download http://people.debian.org/~bartm/pepperf ... rified.txt

Anyone have a solution for this ? :(

The url in the error message is incomplete*), so I can't check, but this usually means that either that particular server/page/file is unavailable or something on your system is blocking it.

What is the exact url?
Does anything show up if you visit it with a browser?
If it does, do you still get an error if you try installing the plugin again?

*) I assume the complete url actually is

Code: Select all

http://people.debian.org/~bartm/pepperflashplugin-nonfree/latest-stable-verified.txt
but I'm not absolutely sure...

Yes several times but with the same result.
I remove pepperflashplugin-nonfree then I try to install it and get the same error message.

I try the command you suggested :

Code: Select all

apt policy pepperflashplugin-nonfree
pepperflashplugin-nonfree:
  Installed: 1.7
  Candidate: 1.7
  Version table:
 *** 1.7 0
        500 http://debian.solydxk.com/production/ testing/contrib i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
so it appears the plugin is installed ?
When I check my Chromium browser no plugin is displayed.

can you go with your browser to this address >> https://people.debian.org/~bartm/pepper ... rified.txt

as you see bellow (in another system) it works

Code: Select all

home zerozero # /usr/sbin/update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree --status
Flash Player version installed on this system : 15.0.0.152
Flash Player version available on upstream site: 15.0.0.189
this doesn't mean much but at least helps us see that it might a problem (probably) with your firewall configuration.
or are you using proxy?

it would have something that you have to setup, so you would know; but you can check for example here

Wasn't that a server issue? And look at this:

lappets' wget:

Code: Select all

Connecting to people.debian.org (people.debian.org)|62.252.172.241|:443... connected.
GnuTLS: The TLS connection was non-properly terminated.
yours (and mine as well, by the way):

Code: Select all

Connecting to people.debian.org (people.debian.org)|5.153.231.30|:443... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Me thinks somebody at 62.252.172.241 hasn't kept his server up to date... ;)

Edit: bit of a hack, but how about temporarily adding people.debian.org to the hosts file with IP address 5.153.231.30 to bypass the load balancer or Virgin Media proxy or whatever is causing the broken server to come up?
Alternative would be to hack the pepperflash script and replace people.debian.org with the actual hostname of 5.153.231.30 (paradis.debian.org).

Grizzler, I followed your suggestion and added the entry into the hosts file and the pepperflashplugin installed ok.
The plugin is now displayed in the chrome://plugins

Code: Select all

Shockwave Flash 15.0 r0
Name:	Shockwave Flash
Description:	Shockwave Flash 15.0 r0
Version:	15.0.0.189
Location:	/usr/lib/pepperflashplugin-nonfree/libpepflashplayer.so
Type:	PPAPI (out-of-process)
 	Disable
MIME types:
MIME type	Description	File extensions
application/x-shockwave-flash	Shockwave Flash
.swf
application/futuresplash	FutureSplash Player
.spl
Disable Always allowed
However when I try to view a video or iplayer, I get the message

Code: Select all

A plugin (Shockwave Flash) isn't responding.
