How to install / and /home on different disks

Postby gcoulthard » 20 May 2013 21:25

Hi there,

I'm preparing a new machine and I'd like to put the root / on a small-ish SSD and the /home folder on a large HDD. Unfortunately, the SolydXK installer does not allow me to select different disks for the / and /home. Does anyone have a workaround or am I not understanding completely? Any help is appreciated.

You can install "normally".
Then after you boot, modify your /etc/fstab to mount your different disk (by UID) with something like:

Code: Select all

UID=9a5e2b79-5c1c-4024-9a95-d4746b953040 /home           ext4    defaults       0       2
(your UID will be different of course)

What I do then (before I mount it) is

Code: Select all

sudo mv /home /home_bak
sudo mkdir /home
to make a backup

Then

Code: Select all

sudo mount -a
That will mount your /home to the new disk.
Then copy say, /home_bak/hinto /home/hinto using either the command line or the filemanager.
That's a "rough" skeleton of what you need to do.

To make it easier, I do this on a crash and burn user id. That way I create my "real user" after I've mounted /home where I want it and I don't have to work about copying things back.

Thank you for the reply, hinto. Yes, your step-by-step directions are what I was trying to avoid <grin>, but so be it. I appreciate you taking the time to explain the why and how. -- Glen
