[Solved] VirtualBox problem on the way to Persistent SolydK USB pen drive

Postby marshall » 01 Nov 2017 20:25

I'm trying to set up a persistent USB pen drive, which is a relatively new adventure for me. Per Schoelje's post on 01 Jan 2016, doing that with SolydXK requires using VirtualBox. So:

[Debian version: 8.9]
[VirtualBox version: 4.3.36]

At the VirtualBox "Settings>Storage" tab I get the following error message:

Invalid Settings Detected:
USB Page:
USB 2.0 is currently enabled for this virtual machine. However, this requires the Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack to be installed. Please install the Extension Pack from the VirtualBox download site or disable USB 2.0 to be able to start the machine.
_______

Yet when I finally found the Extension Pack I received the following message upon trying to install it:

The extension pack is already installed with the same version, would you like reinstall it?
Extension packs complement the functionality of VirtualBox and can contain system level software that could be potentially harmful to your system. Please review the description below and only proceed if you have obtained the extension pack from a trusted source.

Name:
Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Version:
5.2.0r118431
Description:
USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 Host Controller, Host Webcam, VirtualBox RDP, PXE ROM, Disk Encryption, NVMe.
________

Attempting reinstall gives the following:

Failed to install the Extension Pack /tmp/mozilla_marshall0/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.2.0-118431-1.vbox-extpack.
VBoxExtPackRegister returned VERR_VERSION_MISMATCH, pReg=0000000000000000 ErrInfo='VirtualBox version mismatch - expected 5.2 got 4.3'.

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: ExtPackManager
Interface: IExtPackManager {3295e6ce-b051-47b2-9514-2c588bfe7554}
____________

So I'm stuck on error messages from VirtualBox. I would appreciate suggestions on what to do next. Thank you.

The version number of the extension pack should be the same as the version of virtualbox.
You can download your version (4.3.36) here: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... ox-extpack

That's the download I couldn't find!

I had a newer version installed. I told VirtualBox to go ahead and downgrade and it worked. Message was:

"The extension pack
Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
was installed successfully."

Thank you.

Please, add "[Solved]" to the subject line of your opening post so that everybody can see there's a solution to the problem.
