Gparted how to? (Sorted)

Postby wobbly » 09 Jun 2013 12:24

Looking to dual-boot SolydK64 with Windows Vista Business on my pc. I've NOT done dual-boot before so I'm a bit unsure how to partition my disc. Just bought the box yesterday, and had the shop split the disc for me, roughly equal sizes.
I have the following.....

Partition File system Label Size Used Unused Flags
/dev/sda1 ntfs system reserved 100MiB 33.58 Mib 66.41 MIB boot
/dev/sda2 ntfs 150.22 GiB 23.42 GiB 126.80 GiB
unallocated unallocated 147.77 GiB

What is the best way to partition the empty bit for Solydk64? I know that I will need root, swap, and home.

Cheers.

p.s. Only used auto partition before.

Ok, had a look on the web, still a bit confused though.
I have made the unallocated space into sda3 extended 147.77 GiB
Then broken that into three partitions..
sda5 ext3 15.00 GiB 406.63 MiB used 14.60 GiB unused
sda6 linux-swap 2.0 GiB
sda7 ext3 130.77GiB 2.24 GiB used 128.53GiB unused

Does that seem right?

Cheers.

Wow! It worked!
It's nice to use KDE again, not possible for a long time as hardware was to old. Got as far as Mepis8 then had to swap to xfce distros. Have been using SolydX for couple of weeks.
I did try AntiX but not keen on lxde. Nice to have some usable disc space again.
First impressions so far are good. Had to uninstall Firefox and then reinstall to get it working.
Thanks to those behind SolydXK

sorry, somehow i missed this topic
i'm glad you got it working tho
the most troublesome point is grub installation (imo); live-installer defaults correctly to sda and in rare situations this is not the right option (it was seeing your setup)

Welcome, If you want to have more control over grub 2, you might want to look at zerozero's post on installing Grubcustomizer.
http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=248 Fourth post down. It is a nice tool for changing the boot order, background image, font size, etc of the boot menu.

Yes, sda was the default, and correct. All working well so far.

Cheers.
