Shrink Windows partition

Postby ilu » 15 Jan 2019 17:39

I'm trying to shrink a Windows partition to its absolute minimum. Grizzler once recommended Ultradefrag but it made the situation worse because it moved everything to the partitions end. Now there are "locked files" at the end of the partition which I can't move. Even running Ultradefrag during boot won't move these files.

Any suggestions?

Ilu:
I have used minitool partition Wizard Free successfully. https://www.partitionwizard.com/free-pa ... nager.html.
It is free but I don not know if it is OSS. It may be able to solve your problem.

Weird. I got the tip for Ultradefrag from the comments on this page: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- ... -problems/
Oddly enough the comments there seem to have disappeared... :?:

I used the Ultradefrag method successfully twice and I'm actually about to use it again tomorrow. Windows 7 machines, all of them. What's yours?

Edit
Curiouser and curiouser. That How-To Geek page claims to be from December 2016, yet my note referring to it is from November 2014... :?

Mine is Win 10.

I found out what to do to get rid of the locked files: deactivate hibernation, system protection, pagefile and kernel dump.
Here's adetailed walkthrough for Win 8: https://www.download3k.com/articles/How ... ated-00432

The MFT problem can't be solved with Win 10 tools but Ultradefrag doesn't do anything about it either. Someone recommended a shrink-defrag-shrink-defrag-shrink-.. routine which might work. https://superuser.com/questions/1017764 ... -partition and https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows ... -problems/ recommend several other tools for that task but I did not have to use them because getting the locked files out of the way was enough.

Edit: I decided to take a step further with minitool partition Wizard Free which seemed to work, but now I have Boot Configuration Data error 0xc0000034 - which should be easy to fix once the download from MS is finished. - or so I thought. I ran into one trouble after the other. I would not recommend using any of these tools if you love your Win 10 install. I hate the thing more than ever so I don't mind.

I have used EaseUS Partition master in the past but not on Windows 10 used an earlier version for windows 7

I did try Paragon Partiton Manager (for the job I ended up using EaseUS), got the free version got always through committing to shrinking the partition then up pops a screen asking me to pay for the full copy if I wanted to proceed. No mention of that anywhere on their web site.

Anyway that is nothing to do with Ilu's question, hope you get it sorted.
