DVD CD and sd Reader do not work

Postby Peter Mason » 05 May 2017 19:57

I have Solydx 32 bit installed on an old lap top and the DVD/CD player is not in the device list. Neither is the SD reader.

I have read:
https://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2609
and
https://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2762#p26252

This is the result:

Code: Select all

peter-mason@lp03:~$ inxi -r
Repos:     Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://repository.solydxk.com/ solydxk-8 main upstream import
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
           deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
           deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie-backports main contrib non-free
peter-mason@lp03:~$ cat /etc/apt/preferences
cat: /etc/apt/preferences: No such file or directory
peter-mason@lp03:~$ sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, libdvdread4
[sudo] password for peter-mason:
Reading package lists... Done

E: Unable to locate package libdvdcss2,

However ishw does find both the SD reader and the DVD drive see bottom of list:

Re: DVD CD and sd Reader do not work

Postby ilu » 06 May 2017 20:35

I have Solydx 32 bit installed on an old lap top and the DVD/CD player is not in the device list. Neither is the SD reader.

I'm not sure what you mean by "device list". Remember I'm using a different language. What list exactly?

Depending on your settings CD/DVDs and SDcards show up on your desktop and wait there for being mounted. Open Settings->Desktop->Symbols, scroll down to the bottom and mark "removable devices". The empty drive will not show up! Put some working CD or SD in the drive and tell me whether an icon appears on your desktop.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, libdvdread4

As Zero explained in that post, never use commata when installing packages with apt! Repeat that command like this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 libdvdnav4 libdvdread4

I think drives need to be mounted before they show up in blkid. So they wouldn't show up now.

seem's I missed that libdvdcss2 was not installed.

I briefly had Bach but after a restart he had gone.

The hardware list is a result of lshw

After enabling the icon I now have a MULTIUSB usb stick on the desktop waiting to be mounted but I think it was readable from File Manager before.
NO CD/DVD or SD card one with Bach the other with photographs.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with lshw outputs. Could you please try "lsscsi" and "lsusb" ?
Do you know what that multiUSB device is? I mean, do you have a USB stick inserted? Did you try to mount it? SDcards are usually USB devices.

Could you please try "lsscsi" and "lsusb" ?

Code: Select all

peter-mason@lp03:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0781:5581 SanDisk Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 047d:104b Kensington
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

peter-mason@lp03:~$ lsscsi
bash: lsscsi: command not found
peter-mason@lp03:~$ sudo lsscsi
sudo: lsscsi: command not found

The SDD is IDE not SCSI but...

Code: Select all

peter-mason@lp03:~$ sudo lside
[sudo] password for peter-mason:
sudo: lside: command not found
peter-mason@lp03:~$

MultiUSB is indeed a USB drive BUT Is appears in my boot sequence as a hard drive? not as removable device.

Please do "apt-get install lsscsi" and repeat the command.

That multiUSB seems to be a Sandisk device. Do you recognise that manufacturer? Is that one of your devices?

Hm, the DVD is there - no idea why it doesn't show up - maybe try another medium?

The SDcard is still missing though - any idea what manufacturer?

The SD Card is Transcend 2GB. It does work in the camera but has trouble capturing dolphins when the battery is flat ;)
VLC has an open disk feature that produces the following:

Code: Select all

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

Where is the log?

Tomorrow we move again so I may, will probably, go quiet for some time.

p.s. also remember it played Bach this morning.

Ah, dolphins ....

The SD Card is Transcend 2GB

I did not mean the card but the drive.

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda:///dev/sr0'

You can't open anything from /dev. You need to mount it first. Which you can do via right-click, either from the filemanager thunar or from desktop.

No idea what the SD drive is if it does not appear in any list.

I tried mounting /dev/sr0 to /media this did not help.

Where should I mount it to.

Please always quote the exact command you used. As you saw before, a point or comma more or less can ruin the command.

The best way is auto-mounting from either Thunar or desktop but that doesn't seem to work on your machine. You can do it manually for testing purposes - best try this with the Solydxk installation dvd - if you have one - or some other linux medium:

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt

I don't think it will work because I'm suspecting a hardware problem - either the drive or the medium is wonky or the combination of both. Check with different media.

Regarding the SD card I'm out of ideas: Somebody else had a similar problem and solved it by reformatting (https://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=6674&p=63309) - which you can't do because you need the formatting of your camera. Try different cards with different formatting and fileśystems on it. Maybe look up your laptop model on the internet, somebody else might have had the same problem.

/dev/sr0 is for CD/DVD. lsssci could detect the DVD so software wise, it should working unless your DVD reader is broken/the DVD disk is unreadable. as for the SD card, you can use lspci instead to see whether if it detected or not. it should show something like this

Code: Select all

03:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTS5286 PCI Express Card Reader (rev 01)
