No sound with Nvidia CK804 Realtek ALC850 [workaround]

Hello,

there's no sound on a fresh Solydx 01-2014, Hardware Nvidia CK804, Realtek ALC850, AC '97.
Sound is computed someway, as of sound control panels display, but no output.
I have tried the very same board with a Linux Mint 13, and got an old bbut good CS83-/84-something card
working with that, after disabling the board sound output in sound controls, thus removing some sort of conflict.
But board sound i did not hear with either distro yet.
Any suggestions?

Not really, they make it easier to see which bits are output from a Konsole/Terminal, and they have scroll bars which aids in reading a long section. (I recently found this out...)

Excellent. That gives us some good information to troubleshoot with. I did some quick searching and from what I've found it looks like a conflict in alsa mixer between the 2 audio devices, the Radeon HDMI audio and the Nvidia/Intel audio with alsa grabbing the HDMI audio as default and not playing nice with the secondary audio source.

In preparation for trying to solve this let's see the output of:

Thanks to the tenacity of Damon Chesser I found this https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/20 ... 00573.html from the Debian mailing list and it looks like it will resolve your issue.

Basically it looks like Damon had to blacklist the Radeon HDMI audio to get the Nvidia/Intel audio to be picked up by alsa as the primary (if I'm reading that right). It will cause you to not be able to use HDMI audio however so as long as you're not using HDMI audio this should be a solid fix for you. Damon's writeup and steps taken were pretty thorough and looked to be pretty easy to follow. Hopefully this will get you going.

Ok, so that confirms you have 2 audio sources. One for the HDMI output and the other for the onboard Nvidia CK804 audio. Just as a test, fire up either Exaile or VLC and load up a sound file. Set it to loop and start it playing. Bring up both "alsa-mixer" (the one in the system panel with your sound icon) and the "pulse audio mixer" (in the menu under multimedia).

While the audio file is looping set the output (sound card dropdown) in the alsa-mixer to the selection that has "pulse audio" in the name. Mine says "Playback: Built in audio analog stereo (PulseAudio Mixer)". Now in the Pulse Audio Mixer, set your output device to Analog Output Port and on the "Configuration" tab try some of the different choices. I can make my sound disappear and reappear depending on what profile I select there.

Also pay attention that nothing is muted on either of the mixers as I found sometimes my output muted when changing different selections. My experiment looked like this: Image
The Pulse Audio mixer is on the left and the Alsa-Mixer is on the right. Hopefully this will help or you've found another solution by now.

If this doesn't get you anywhere here's a shell script that will gather more info that may help. The link with instructions is here:https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo and it has you doing two things.
1. Changing to your home folder
2. Downloading and running the script (it save the shell script in your home folder in case you ever want to use it again) and will save the output in a text file in /tmp and give you the name it saved it as.

Copy the info in that output back here (inside code tags because it will be pretty large) if you're still not making progress and maybe it will give us a clue. Good luck and good job hanging in there and trying to work through this.

I used a YT video for lack of a file at hand, and tried all of the above, including digital out optical, got red signal light,
computed sound signal bars, but no sound still.

After looking at the output of that alsa-info script it's got me as confused as I believe your sound system is but I think one of two thing are going on.

1. Alsa is confusing the two sound outputs and I'll show a couple examples in a minute from your alsa-info output. That would mean we need to find a way to disable or hide your hdmi sound from alsa.

2. Due to an AC97 quirk your outputs are actually swapped. We can test that if you'll plug some headphones/ear-buds into the headphone jack (directly on the motherboard back panel if this is a desktop) while testing for sound. For consistency of testing, here's a link to a small 3 second sound file you can download and use to loop in your player while testing: http://dougneubauer.com/mhcctest/ about half way down the page grab the MP3 audio test file (53k file) that's only 3 seconds or so long but set your audio player to loop it while testing. As before make sure alsa-mixer has the playback for pulse audio selected and open up the pulse-audio mixer. See Gene C's post here:http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=92#p738 and try and disable your HDMI/ High Def Audio output. Then choose "analog output" on the output devices tab and see if you get audio either from speakers or headphones. If you hear the headphones but not the speakers try toggling the output to headphones and see if you get any sound from either. Try and raise/lower the output on both the headphone and speaker outputs and note if either give sound control. Here's some info from the "Alsa-configuration" text file that unfortunately isn't in my SolydX install (should be in /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver but isn't. I got this file from a Mint16 install.

AC97 Quirk Option
=================

The ac97_quirk option is used to enable/override the workaround for
specific devices on drivers for on-board AC'97 controllers like
snd-intel8x0.  Some hardware have swapped output pins between Master
and Headphone, or Surround (thanks to confusion of AC'97
specifications from version to version :-)

The driver provides the auto-detection of known problematic devices,
but some might be unknown or wrongly detected.  In such a case, pass
the proper value with this option.

The following strings are accepted:
    - default	Don't override the default setting
    - none	Disable the quirk
    - hp_only	Bind Master and Headphone controls as a single control
    - swap_hp	Swap headphone and master controls
    - swap_surround  Swap master and surround controls
    - ad_sharing  For AD1985, turn on OMS bit and use headphone
    - alc_jack	For ALC65x, turn on the jack sense mode
    - inv_eapd	Inverted EAPD implementation
    - mute_led	Bind EAPD bit for turning on/off mute LED

For backward compatibility, the corresponding integer value -1, 0,
... are  accepted, too.

For example, if "Master" volume control has no effect on your device
but only "Headphone" does, pass ac97_quirk=hp_only module option.
So that's some background info on what you're testing there. If that's the problem we just have to figure out where that's loaded from. Here's the relevant section from your alsa-info output:

which also is calling out the CK804 as the first card BUT your aplay output that you posted above shows the CK804 not as the first card but as the second card. Hmmmm..

So if you want to try blacklisting the hda (hdmi) audio you could add it to your alsa-base-blacklist.conf file and see if that fixes it. If so open up a terminal and enter:

save the file, reboot and see if it helps. If it doesn't help I'd consider removing from blacklisting so you don't forget it later and have it come back to bite you. I'd also suggest you read through the Soundcard Database thread here:http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=137 and that may give you some further ideas to try.

Quick follow-up on the blacklisting idea if you decide to try it. I have seen the blacklist done 2 different ways. The line I gave you above and this one:

Hello Cobb, thanks for your effort.

edit:
- found that i was misled by the disable remark-link, blacklisted HDMI (hda intel), as suggested by you some lines further, and rebooted
- found sound is working now from both optical out and mainboard out same time.
- both mixers, ck804 or Pulse, work for output on both analogue and digital stereo (duplex, untested)
- lesser quirk remains - sound is directed to 'side right/left' speaker connector, instead of 'front right/left' one (all 6 sockets: line in, front r/l, Mic in, Center/Sub, Rear r/l, Side r/l). Considering the low quality of the circuit i doubt i will ever use surround technology with this board.

Unless you have another suggestion now, i can live with a blacklisted device i didn't plan on using anyway. At least until someone comes along pointing out how to get better analogue out from the HDMI signal/cable.

Nice to see you have sound at least. Maybe not the best solution in the long run but it gets you going for now and you can continue to look for other solutions at your leisure.
