Acer ER1401 emachines graphics

Postby t0psy » 02 Jun 2014 19:48

I recently installed Solydx on this machine.
It appeared to work fine on the Nouveau Open Source Graphics driver.
However after I wondered if it would perform better with the proprietary Nvidia driver.
I used the Solydx DDM on the welcome screen to install the current recommended Nvidia 331.xxx.
This driver appears to work initially then totally crashes the machine after an indeterminate period.

It appears the ER1401 requires the legacy Nvidia driver so used:-

sudo apt-get install nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver nvidia-xconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo reboot

source:-
http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2908

Result was a complete working Nvidia driver.

I am curious to know whether the failure of DDM to select the correct driver a Solydx issue, poor information from Nvidia or some other cause?

ahh, i see.
this is one of the cards that is in the twilight zone
the legacy 304.xx driver should support the GeForce 6xxx and 7xxx series; above that all cards should be supported by the "release" driver.

the official support list is this >> http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... chips.html
but you are not the first that finds that the legacy driver works better with that type of card

To add to what zerozero has already posted:

problems; usually it's the best way to destroy an install"

Thanks guys, the tutorial was where I got the code from to install the legacy driver (as quoted in my post).

I did have a brief flirt with Manjaro last week and it too installed the new driver and not the legacy driver.
However I searched for a fix and found in the Arch User Forum:-

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
add
options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=0

This worked in Manjaro (Arch), but not here in Debian world.

BTW I have installed several *buntu distros, most recently xbmcbuntu 13.0 on this machine and the legacy Nvidia driver has been installed each time.
