Driver for ATI RV710 [Radeon HD 4350/4550]

Postby zmr » 01 Feb 2015 17:00

Driver for ATI RV710 [Radeon HD 4350/4550]

I'm encountering a problem with a (proprietary) ATI graphics driver I had
installed via the Device Driver Manager.
The hardware was correctly identified (by DDM) as ATI RV710 [Radeon HD 4350/4550].
So I proceeded with the install.
After reboot, the resolution was reduced to 1280x1024 and the display appears
slightly distorted/stretched.

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RV710 [Radeon HD 4350/4550]
           bus-ID: 02:00.0 chip-ID: 1002:954f
           Display Server: X.Org 1.16.2.901 drivers: fbdev,ati,vesa,radeon
           Resolution: 1280x1024@0.00hz
GLX Renderer: N/A GLX Version: N/A Direct Rendering: N/A
Firing up the ATI Catalyst Control Center I get this error message:

"Initialization Error. There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It
could be caused by the following.
No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning
properly.
Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure
using aticonfig."

I've been searching the AMD/ATI website for a suitable driver since.
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
Unfortunately I couldn't localise anything for this particular card :(

1) Any other source where I could find a working driver?

2) How can I revert the (DDM install) process and return to the old driver?

Thanks in advance
ZmR

Here's some additional output (but irrelevant as far as this issue is concerned, I'm afraid)

Code: Select all

~ $ fglrxinfo

Unfortunately, only the 5000 series and up are supported. So, it shouldn't have shown anything in DDM.

Please post back the log file: /var/log/ddm.log
rename to .txt to attache to your post.

To uninstall, launch DDM, de-select the driver and hit Install.

Looking at the code I think it should show but install the legacy driver xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Can you check if that is installed?

Code: Select all

apt search xserver-xorg-video-radeon | grep ^i
If nothing returns, it is NOT installed.

I have the Ati 4350 on dual displays using the open drivers. As there is no proprietary driver supported due to current xorg versions being incompatible. As card is a Legacy card no longer properly supported in recent changes to xorg system. A couple of years ago I could have done what you done if I wanted to revert xorg to an earlier version would have been required.

Sorry don't know how to undo or roll back. But sure there are threads here. Or someone can chime in with the steps to take.

I've put this on my todo list

I don't know why it's not selected, but I'll find out with the log file...hopefully.

To help you, you could run the bash that would have been fired if you could have de-selected the check box:

Code: Select all

sudo install-open

I too am having this problem.

I used the new DDM and it installed the fglrx-non-free ATI/AMD RadeonHD display driver and Superseded Xorg drivers.

So I un-installed everything fglrx and it fixed my display and now it works like before I used the DDM.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Gxx
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RS880 [Radeon HD 4290]
           bus-ID: 01:05.0 chip-ID: 1002:9714
           Display Server: X.Org 1.16.2.901 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 1680x1050@59.95hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880 GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2 Direct Rendering: Yes

FIXED!
Splendid Schoelje, this did the trick! :D
Proprietary drivers were removed, system reverted back to the open drivers - after reboot!
Everything seems to run smoothly now.
Thanks a million - you saved my day!

Appreciate your suggestion - would've tried that next --- IF Schoelje's command hadn' fixed the problem already. :)
As for the 'why' - this remains mysterious.
Besides, I got the impression that clicking the Install/Save button (DDM) had no effect whatsoever.

I have uploaded an experimental version of DDM here: http://downloads.solydxk.nl/dev/ddm_2.0.3_all.deb
Could you try it out?
You know how to fix it when things go wrong ;)

Don't forget to attach the /var/log/ddm.log when you post back.

Great Schoelje, just tried your new DDM.
Seems to work. No conflicts or errors.
But I'm not so sure if a new driver has been installed at all...

Code: Select all

 $ inxi -Gxx
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RV710 [Radeon HD 4350/4550]
           bus-ID: 02:00.0 chip-ID: 1002:954f

           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV710
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2 Direct Rendering: Yes
looks identical to yesterdays/previous state.
(No aticonfig was installed. No fglrx to be found)
I've attached and uploaded a new ddm.log for you to look into.
Appreciate your input. Cannot really complain about the display resolution anymore, either :)

inxi's output shows that the system continues to use the open-source Gallium drivers:

Code: Select all

GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4
for proprietary AMD drivers the output would be different:

Code: Select all

GLX Renderer: AMD Radeon 6600M and 6700M Series
the difference between free and proprietary AMD drivers in inxi's output is shown here.

probably the Radeon HD 4350/4550 is a bit old, and AMD doesn't support it anymore in Catalyst drivers. don't know how DDM behaves in such a situation.

Here are the files for before and after trying Schoelje experimental DDM version.

Same results as zmr
No conflicts or errors and no fglrx files were installed.

It should have installed xserver-xorg-video-radeon but I think that is already installed by default.
Perhaps just skip showing ATI cards older than HD 5000?

xserver-xorg-video-radeon was installed to begin with then the DDM installed the ATI / fglrx files over them.

Your mod version DDM shows "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD / ATI] RS 880" but doesn't install anything.
