Using old Sony Handycam as webcam and more.

Postby jsalpha2 » 14 Jun 2015 20:27

Dug this old TRV340 out of storage. Last time I used it was with Windows XP and I could stream the video through USB for web chat or as a security camera. Sony did not put out drivers for Vista or Win 7. Tried using SolydX and VLC and not working.

If I remember correctly, with Xp I would open Media Player Classic and select open device. The new HomeCinema version may no longer have this feature.

I have a bunch of tapes I would like to move to the computer and then edit, but I think I may need to install a firewire card to do that. Any ideas on what card to get or what software? Thanks

lusb shows ID 054c:0045 Sony Corp. Digital Imaging Video

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'v4l2://'. Check the log for details

Is this Laptop with it's own webcam. I ask because there may be a conflict.

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail
might tell you something after you plug in the sony and try to use it. Be sure to turn it on if it has a on switch (I don't know, just guessing)

My reading up on it shows it has firewire and usb hookups.
Are you using firewire? Or just usb?

Might help, or not.

I have a desktop, no webcam. I don't have a firewire card in the computer right now, I may purchase one if I have to. Will get back to working with it tomorrow. Thanks
