Tap to click on touchpad not working after update

Postby nmambre » 01 May 2016 06:28

Hi all,

Like the title says. I was able to click by tapping on the touchpad, but it seemed to be disabled after some updates. I was offline for a couple of days so it grabbed a bunch of updates 2 days ago, afterwards I found the problem. I'm on SolydX EE 64bits, and also installed KDE to check it out, but don't really use it. Because of this error I changed into the KDE session and was able to activate this option in KDE, and it works, but back in XFCE session it's not working. In the Mouse and Touchpad settings I don't see any option to activate this. Two finger scrolling for example is working correctly. In Settings Editor --> pointers I see the Synaptics_Tap_Action (array) but the Edit button is greyed out (and not sure what to put there if I were able to edit it)

Code: Select all

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/solydxk-synaptics.conf
Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Touchpad tweaks for SolydXK"
    Option "TapButton1" "1"
EndSection
Checking the online help I see there should be an option for Touchpad, but I don't have that. (see attachment). Tried checking for drivers to install, but the only one listed is for Radeon R2 graphics.

Maybe KDE settings is overriding XFCE settings? Or what else could I do to get tap to click working again?

(Unrelated: the update manager version 2.9.7 keeps the green arrow icon indicating downloads available, even after installing updates and giving the message the the system is up to date. This message box pops up twice. After rebooting it will show new updates.)

Could you edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/solydxk-synaptics.conf so that it looks like this:

Code: Select all

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "touchpad"
    Driver "synaptics"
    MatchIsTouchpad "on"
        Option "TapButton1" "1"
        Option "TapButton2" "3"
        Option "TapButton3" "2"
        Option "VertEdgeScroll" "on"
        Option "VertTwoFingerScroll" "on"
        Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "on"
        Option "HorizTwoFingerScroll" "on"
        Option "CircularScrolling" "on"
        Option "CircScrollTrigger" "2"
        Option "EmulateTwoFingerMinZ" "40"
        Option "EmulateTwoFingerMinW" "8"
        Option "CoastingSpeed" "0"
        Option "FingerLow" "30"
        Option "FingerHigh" "50"
        Option "MaxTapTime" "125"
EndSection
I don't have time to test this out myself.

I intalled several Acer notebooks this weekend and could not get rightclick behaviour to work reliably on the touchpads. Two-finger-clicks sometimes worked but it was a pita. Following the same tutorial I edited /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf.

Code: Select all

# This option enables the bottom right corner to be a right button on clickpads
# and the right and middle top areas to be right / middle buttons on clickpads
# with a top button area.
# This option is only interpreted by clickpads.
Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "Default clickpad buttons"
        MatchDriver "synaptics"
==> Option "Clickpad" "true"
        Option "SoftButtonAreas" "50% 0 82% 0 0 0 0 0"
        Option "SecondarySoftButtonAreas" "58% 0 0 15% 42% 58% 0 15%"
EndSection
Should this better be put into the file you mentioned in /etc? Or is there a better solution (than Option "Clickpad" "true".) to get reliable rightclick behaviour?

Personally I don't mind using the physical right click button on the pad.
I'll check later about the 2 finger clicking. (2 finger scrolling was working fine, but I changed it to Edge scrolling, which I was using in the past)

2 finger scrolling worked fine but 2 finger clicking not. Having the right click is ok but my friends would not have been able to apply the fix. If this problem occurs on more synaptic clickpads (not just Acer) then the problem should best be fixed in the Solydx system adjustments. How are your notebooks behaving, Arjen?

In the configuration that Arjen posted, 2 finger clicking is hit and miss. (tested in browser and thunar)
Is the clickpad option for all synaptic touchpads or only Acer? Mine is a Lenovo.

Honestly since today I'm experiencing a different behaviour of the touchpad (tapping, scrolling).
Apparently it seems it is suddenly less sensible.
I'm going to test it on the other OS I have in dual boot... to understand if it is an hardware problem or something related to the latest update on my SolydK 8 64bit.

Touchpad doesn't work since recent update

Postby ike2552 » 04 May 2016 00:40

Hello,

Since the recent system update my touchpad no longer works at all. I am using an Asus X553M laptop. I have no idea how to fix it and I do not know any terminal commands to help me roll back a driver or downgrade any updates. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've moved your post to this topic because this is the reason the configuration file was changed.
The file responsible for the touchpad configuration is: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/solydxk-synaptics.conf
Perhaps there are clues on touchpad in the ~/.xsession-errors file.

Hello again,

Thank you for the quick reply. I did look at this post before I made my own. This person was having trouble with X but had no problem using K. I am having the problem in K and also my touchscreen no longer works.

I would also need step by step instructions on how to do anything in the terminal. I am a GUI only person. That's why I chose this distro, everything worked without doing any terminal work.

To change the config from GUI, you should be able to do it in the settings of KDE. If you have problems finding the exact menu, let us know (if needed I'll boot into KDE to check).
Applying the changes that Schoelje posted can be done in GUI too. You can try with

Code: Select all

kdesu kate
(to run the text editor kate as root) and then open the configuration file. Then you just copy and paste the configuration posted above (overwriting original content) and save. After a reboot it should work (at least it worked for me).

Or open a terminal and run

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/solydxk-synaptics.conf
Enter your password, hit enter
In the nano editor delete everything in the config file.
Paste the content in the editor (in some terminals you can right click and paste, in others you use shift+ctrl+v)
Ctrl+o and then enter to save.
Ctrl+x to exit nano.
Close terminal and reboot.

Thank you for the assist nmambre. I followed your terminal instructions and saw the changes take effect, but unfortunately it didn't work. By the way, the kdesu kate command was not recognized in the terminal, otherwise I would have gone the GUI route LOL.

I did notice that when I go into system settings and look at the touchpad settings, my touchpad is not listed as a synaptic device (which is probably was before this happened). It is lited as ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad. I do not have a pulldown menu to change it to synaptic. I'm thinking this is where my problem lies. I did using the device driver manager but it didn't detect anything. I'm not sure what to do now besides a HD format and clean install. Any ideas? :?:

I don't have much more ideas, so you'll have to wait for others that can help.
As asked in the description of the Hardware section, post the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fzx
Maybe it can help others pinpoint the problem, or they will ask you the outputs of other diagnostic commands.

Re: [Solved]Tap to click on touchpad not working after update

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 05 May 2016 08:02

I had a little time to experiment.
For me the two finger scrolling never worked, even when I remove the configuration from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/solydxk-touchpad.conf and remove the directory ~/.config/synaptiks (and reboot after doing that). It seems to be on by default on KDE but I'm not sure about that.

I ended up with this conf:

Code: Select all

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "touchpad catchall"
    Driver "synaptics"
    MatchIsTouchpad "on"
    MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Option "TapButton1" "1"
        Option "TapButton2" "3"
        Option "TapButton3" "2"
        Option "VertEdgeScroll" "on"
        Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "on"
EndSection
@ike2552
You could try to do the above. Perhaps it works on your system.

Output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Re: [Solved]Tap to click on touchpad not working after update

Postby ilu » 05 May 2016 12:18

@nmambre: Please edit your first post and remove the "solved" tag because I think the issue is not really solved.

I have to clarify that I'm mainly talking about modern synaptic clickpads here, those without the right-click area. In the default config of the april nightlies the touchpad is bordering unusable. There are several issues that would drive anybody without deeper knowledge to frustration.

1. 2-finger scrolling worked fine for me with the installed default settings both on clickpad and older touchpad.
2. 2-finger-rightclick on clickpads is hit and miss, as you said. More miss though. Not needed on touchpads naturally.
3. Can't say anything about whatever tapping because I didn't knew about that fancy stuff.
4. Adjusting window size is almost impossible on clickpads and touchpads alike. It takes a lot of fumbling to align the curser with the window border and when you start dragging you almost always lose the edge again and have to start anew. You have to hit the exact right pixel and even straying one pixel left or right will mess it up. This is managable with a good mouse but not with a pad.

Regarding 2: Defining a right-click-area on clickpads helped (by adding Option "Clickpad" "true") and if we don't find a better solution for a reliabls 2-finger-click this should become default.
Regarding 4.: I know this behaviour from mice with a very high resolution so I'm guessing that todays pads also use higher resolutions. Sensitivity has to be lowered and you can't regulate that in the xfce settings window. I think default config should lower sensitivity on pads and mice considerably and slow them down too.

I came up with this in /home/xxx/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/pointer.xml for my mouse and it worked (I'm not sure about the last 2 names). Something like this has to be done for pads too.

Code: Select all

    <property name="RightHanded" type="bool" value="true"/>
    <property name="Threshold" type="int" value="10"/>
    <property name="Acceleration" type="double" value="1.000000"/>
    <property name="AccelerationProfile" type="int" value="0"/>
    <property name="VelocityScale" type="double" value="8.000000"/>
    <property name="DeviceAccelVelocityScaling" type="double" value="8.000000"/>
    <property name="Device-Accel-Velocity-Scaling" type="double" value="8.000000"/>
I would try diferent settings but I can't because I don't have a pad here atm.

@ Schoelje

"I had a little time to experiment.
For me the two finger scrolling never worked, even when I remove the configuration from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/solydxk-touchpad.conf and remove the directory ~/.config/synaptiks (and reboot after doing that). It seems to be on by default on KDE but I'm not sure about that."

I have no idea how to remove the configuration or the directory you mentioned. Basically all I know how to do is copy and paste other people's commands into my terminal. If you can type out the commands for me I'll paste them into my terminal and give you the results.

I did try to modify the command I got from nmambre "sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/solydxk-synaptics.conf" to end in touchpad.conf. When I entered that command I got a screen with no settings at all.

For your second request I ran "kate /var/log/Xorg.0.log"
Here is my result:

Re: [Solved]Tap to click on touchpad not working after update

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 06 May 2016 07:55

If you run this command:

Code: Select all

kdesudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/solydxk-touchpad.conf
you will be asked for your password and Kate will open with the config file.
You then can change the contents of the file as mentioned in my previous post.
Save the file and close Kate.
Now, remove any existing personal configuration:

Code: Select all

rm -r ~/.config/synaptiks
and reboot.
Check if that changed anything.

SolydXK needs you!

For my particular case it was solved...
But I'll edit the title. Should I include "clickpad" too in the title?
