SolydXK steadily gaining in popularity ...

Talking about SolydXK, another distribution or totally off-topic but within the Rules ? It's the right place!

SolydXK steadily gaining in popularity ...

Postby timber » 15 Sep 2013 03:56

... as noted on on their website "DistroWatch Page Hit Ranking statistics are a light-hearted way of measuring the popularity of Linux distributions".
Even so, it's good to see SolydXK steadily moving up in the ranks.
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=solydxk

It's easy to see why ...
Once new users get past the initial stage of installation, explore a bit and become more familiar with X and/ or K it appears that many are enjoying the stay, I know I am. People like to share a good thing, so others are getting the news.
Participating in the forums here brings further understanding and I've noticed a gradual but steady increase in helpful posts from a variety of members lately, it's nice to see.

I find it comforting to learn that Schoelje, Zerozero and others directly involved plan to stay within the original scope of SolydXK (i.e. To stay true to the X and the K and concentrate efforts there by continually improving and updating them rather than trying to spread things too thin and trying to be something for everybody.

Kudos SolydXK team!
Keep on keepin' on ...

It's always nice to see a good distro getting recognition and the higher a distro rates on this site the more interest it gets. But, as you've already noted, the statistic itself must be taken with a grain of salt.

I am reminded of something I read at Groklaw a while back. It's not recent but it is still pertinent to this thread. (I've added my own emphases.)
I wrote to Distrowatch's Ladislav Bodnar [Distrowatch's founder] and asked what their figures mean to them. Here is his answer:
What do the figures mean to you?

They represent the number of clicks on each distributions-specific page on DistroWatch. Nothing more and nothing less. In theory, the more popular a distro, the more clicks its page should get, but in practice this might or might not be the case, who knows. You can also look at it as an ongoing popularity poll among the visitors of DistroWatch.

I started the ranking some 5 years ago as a fun way of measuring the popularity of distributions and I thought it would remain a little fun toy, but many visitors take it far too seriously. In the past, the ranking figures made it into the various press releases by Mandriva, Ubuntu and now Novell and many other web sites draw attention to it regularly. Heise.de recently called it a "distro hitparade". I'd like to believe that there is some truth in the figures, but in all honesty, they really don't mean all that much and should not be taken very seriously.

SolydXK now at number 70 and rising at Distrowatch. I know it's not science but it has to mean something. ( something good I would presume. ) Great job ! SolydXK team. :D

Yep steady slide up over last month does mean something.
As moved up 30 positions last 4-5 weeks means others are seeing SolydXK mentioned in blogs, linux action show, youtube reviews and clicking on to check them out.

I am thinking many are tiring of Ubuntu's direction and upgrade methodology and ubuntu derivatives requiring a clean install for new versions every 6 months. As in place updates always seem to be a crap-shoot cross your fingers kind of affair.

Was my motivation to seek out Solyd's Debian semi-rolling and it's connection to Mint family So Much the Better! :P

68 SolydXK 202>

Just saw that! SolydXK is on a roll, there is little doubt! ... ^ ... in the green ... congrats!!!
Slow and steady, it's really nice (and fun) to see.

I only wish my IRA would climb in such a manner (actually, with banlanced funds they kind of do ... but at a much, much slower rate) ...

Nice job SolydXK team!
I'm enjoying the ride ... I just got really lucky and happened to find SolydXK when I did ...
... it's little wonder, however, SolydXK is doing just the right thing at the right time ... I'm happy for all involved!

A HUGE congrats to Schoelje and Zerozero and the gang!
... or perhaps it should be Schoelje and Zerozero ... not sure.
Maybe Schoelje and Zerozero is more like it.
... anyway ... CONGRATS to the team!

Apologize and sorry if other's found it bad taste.
As just in a Halloween mode here in the states.
And Creepy,Scary Halloween abounds on many sites.

And really didn't think any would find it offensive when I posted it.
Will refrain from posting any images that other's may find offensive and again apologize for a bad action.

I think the Business Edition will help to increase the climb! I think there are many out there who want an easy to use, polished version of Debian Stable with some proprietary/nonfree software. Just like the Business Edition will offer. I think the 2 editions will complement each other nicely with users switching between the rolling and business edition based on needs. I just wish the business edition was ready to go. I have a friend who just installed Kubuntu this weekend because they didn't want the rolling edition. But they loved SolydK and are waiting for the Business Edition final release. So I think both editions will work nicely together to bring in some people.

Hopefully, this growth will also bring in development help. I think everyone is a little nervous about small distros right now. I think part of the reason my friend went with Kubuntu is because he had SolusOS on his laptop and was (needlessly) concerned since SolusOS was done.
