Huddled round the radio listening to Winston Churchill.
Being blown out of bed by a landmine that fell in the paddock by our farmhouse. (Glass and stuff everywhere).
The school being bombed and the roof going (no one was hurt badly owing to the efforts of our headmaster) - we were not in a shelter as there had been no warning. Hurrah, no stuff to repair it so no school. Wrong. They stuck tarps over it and we were back in a few days.
24 hours of tanks rolling past our house as they set out for the invasion of France.
The Italian POWs building us play houses out of straw bales and making us wooden toys.

Well that's a start...

Yes, all the above (except the WW2 stuff, not quite that old.. ;) ..)

Also
.15 cent burger chef burgers and fries.

hot rod car clubs

ability (as a pre teen) to take my dog and .22 rifle into the woods to shoot tin cans without the SWAT police showing up. (I grew up in rural areas).
It was a time when people shot at tin cans not other people in malls/schools...

Double header movies on Sat for .25 cents, and movie theaters large enough to hold more than 15 people..

Very little highway traffic.

But, most of all NO

'social media'
cable TV with 300 stations of crap..

I guess its typical for each generation to think its youth had it the best (I sure do).. ;)

I remember those real cartoons as well and had already named Heckle and Jeckle.
There was also Mickey,,, as in Mouse of course.

Bugs Bunny
Wile E Coyote
Yosemite Sam
Foghorn Leghorn
Roadrunner
Speedy Gonzales
Chicken Hawk
Daffy Duck
Porky Pig
Sylvester
Tweety Bird
That little Alien Dude

We was po-folks and the only movie I saw as a kid was Beach Blanket Bingo [Annette and Frankie] and it cost a dime. I was in the military before I ever went to another theater and then it was Fists of Fury with Bruce Lee which was a Buck. I stopped going to theaters when I took the kids to see Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles. Two kids, the Ex and me was $100. :o

I don't talk about the horror stories from my youth,,, period. I'm also a Viet Nam vet and don't talk much about that either. The cartoons, a loaf of bread for a nickel, and yeah I spent many an hour in the woods plinking with the 22 and nobody batted an eye are lots more fun to remember. There are things some of us lived through we would never want to repeat or wish on anyone,,, but there are also memories I for one wouldn't trade for anything. :D

I can also remember:

Death Valley Days
Wagon Train
Have Gun Will Travel
Maverick
The Rifleman

Bud and Lou had their own show that was as hilarious as Red Skelton. Anyone recall their skit "Who's on first?" Here's a link to it http://youtu.be/kTcRRaXV-fg

The Mustang was HOT!

If you were a biker you had a Harley and it was probably a Panhead or maybe a knucklehead depending on your tastes.,,, unless you were lucky enough to have found an old Indian.

Sneakers were most likely Red Ball Jets and there wasn't a Wal Mart to buy them from. They came from Rinks or Kresge's.

A pocket calculator was a folded up piece of paper and a pencil.

I remember Keds but what I recall with Red Ball Jets one could "Run faster, go further and jump higher!"

Kinda like Choo Choo Charlies "Good & Plenty! Good & Plenty! Good & Plenty!"

A 16 oz coke was a quarter with a nickel back on the bottle. Ride your bike around and find empty coke bottles and you had a free coke,,,, and a nickel back. We weren't city kids so finding empties wasn't much of a challenge. We usually found plenty of them between our home and the store. Enough that we bought ourselves each a Power House candy bar to boot.

I remember White Castles as ten for a buck.
Fess Parker followed up Davey Crocket by playing Daniel Boone on a series.
My favorite Martian
Long hair was scandalous on a guy but Elvis sideburns were "cool".
Penny loafers and saddle shoes.
If you couldn't afford Brylcream a dab of Vaseline did the same darned thing. ;)
A Halloween mask was a file, a lump of charcoal and you had a Charlie Chaplin mustache and good to go, and more candy than a wise child could eat in six months.

I see that most of you list nostalgic TV programs. TV wasn't around when I was a kid, but these are available on Internet Archive and I've had a bit of fun watching them.

The earliest program I took notice of was when I got back to England, from where there was no TV, and I watched the first episode of Doctor Who. I loved it and have seen that episode a few more times since. (As well as the whole series later, of course.)

A number of people where I was living at the time complained in letters to the paper that it was too violent!! :)

Great, I finally found the old farts thread!

Here's my list, but some of it you might not know:

Blakes 7 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km9GdKM9pa4)
I Claudius (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9PA_DB ... 90A6D17AC3)
Chewing on all Hubba Bubba's at the same time
Watching horror classics from the 30's on WDR (dubbed in German, of course)
Pipi Langkaus (Pippi Långstrump, but in Dutch)
Dr. Who (the one with the ridiculously long shawl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tyBYzeIJjI)
Drinking Shandy (7-up, with a hint of beer), and feeling incredibly cool
Mix Dr. Pepper with sugar, and try to drink that
Listening to Herman van Veen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IiMWa3GKcg), Ramses Shaffy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5cntzEZo1w), and Boudewijn de Groot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2tQByk6Qo0)

And a big +1 for I, Claudius! That's the one I have, from 1976 with Derek Jacobi. There's supposed to be a new project in the works, co-developed by BBC and HBO2. Very little info out there yet; they only started working on it last year. Hope they do justice to it.

Patzy has me beat. I remember Churchill, but it was post WWII. I don't remember much from the late 1940s, but I remember more from the 1950s: e.g., Queen Elizabeth coronation and my grandmother watching it on TV. I might have been in Kindergarten then, so I didn't understand the brouhaha. Truman was president, so who was this queen? By the time I was in the first grade, Ike was president.

Like other U.S. kids, I watched cartoons and others shows on TV Saturday mornings. I began listening to R&B and R&R music early on since my mother's two teenage sisters lived with us and that's what they listened to. It was a time when you could buy penny candy, $.05 cokes, and go to the movies on a Saturday aftermoon and watch a double feature, with previews and cartoons, for just $.25.

That's jsut a sample of my earliest memories....
