Something in google has upset firefox

Talking about SolydXK, another distribution or totally off-topic but within the Rules ? It's the right place!

yes the process you describe is what happens to me. My apologies for misleading you all by assuming that Firefox was the culprit.

To be exact the window reports "User name password invalid"

The update/upgrade runs without error. I will post the response from the affected machine.

Also did install htop. and I remember the original Thunderbird fail had me checking the password until I got stuck thinking it was Firefox.

To answer your question it is Thunderbird that has the problem adding the second account.

I have just successfully used the google verification page in Firefox, the one partially displayed by Thunderbird, to log in to my google account.

There are two issues. The hard error with Thunderbird "add account" and a speed issue with Firefox.

I have just opened Source forge and had the message "It is taking too long do you want to stop it" no. It eventually finished. However whilst waiting endlessly for google maps to finish loading when I came back to it Firefox had closed. Repeating this has now stalled the machine with slow mouse clicks and long key stroke delays. Is this a problem with my 1,5GB RAM?. Closing Google maps frees up the machine. The waiting for google access in Thunderbird may be a manifestation of the same thing.

OK now I think I have run out of memory, any or several pages open can block the machine. On the way to it I sometimes get a "This page is slowing Firefox do you want to stop" message but this is rare. I seems I have used 1,4GB of 1,5 GB of memory and any more causes the slow response.

How say you?

That's not a thunderbird problem but a google problem. So for some reason google thinks your credentials are wrong. Usually they are right :-). I can't help you with that.

Also your Internet is really slow - too slow for a lot of modern sites. This might look like Firefox is hanging. You should never open morre than one tab at a time, especially with graphics heavy stuff like google maps. It could help to try to use the mobile version, but I don't know how because I use openstreetmap.org.

Is this a problem with my 1,5GB RAM?

Yes. If your machine is older, you should not use KDE but SolydX. I highly recommend a reinstall just for this reason. You'll be happier. KDE has eye candy that needs extra power.

If you reinstall, keep your data on that extra partition you created. Do a standard install and mount the data partition into /home/<username>/Documents afterwards. If you keep your data on that extra partition 20 gb is more than enough for the whole system. It's important that you use a swap partition of at least 3 GB. This will prevent your system from running out of memory.

The mounting is done in a file named /etc/fstab. To mount your data partition into the (empty!) directory "Documents" you add a line like:

Code: Select all

# /dev/sdb6
UUID=very-long-UUID-number   /home/<username>/Documents   ext4   defaults   0   0

The very-long-UUID-number is determined by the command "sudo blkid".

In most applications it is not a problem to direct all data there - in Thunderbird you can do that by changing /home/<username>/.thunderbird/profiles.ini:

Code: Select all

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=Standard
IsRelative=0
Path=/home/<username>/Documents/path-where-you-copied-your-profile

I chose "Documents" as a mount point because most applications already use this as their data directory. Please check the name in english. I use another language.

Thank you for that advice. I am downloading kdx now. I will implement your suggestions but since the weather has improved and I believe that the engine alarm I had last time we attempted to get off this mooring is fixed, I do not think that I will have much time until the end of the month. We will go to sea tomorrow morning.
Thank you for the excellent service.

Peter.

Ist es so offensichtlich, daß dieser Gruß deutsch ist? Ich hätte auch noch "Mast- und Schotbruch" hinzufügen können, aber Du bist ja auf einem Motorboot.
