[SOLVED] Black screen after logging out.

Postby bksupport » 13 Mar 2014 17:59

I made a new user and after I log out with the 1st user I am left with a black screen and just the mouse cursor.
I did a complete re-install and it does the same thing.

I could use Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login and then do startx, but that is not something I can expect my users to do.

So how come there is not an account-selectionscreen after I log out and how can this be made to work?

I am using the SolydK BE.

All answers appreciated.

The weird thing is that when I do this in a SolydKBE running in virtualBox it works fine......
:EDIT
The answer is here:
viewtopic.php?f=61&t=3148#p29823
See: section [X-:*-Core] in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc in line 496, remove the # so it reads:
TerminateServer=true

Okay, first I'll need a bit more info on your hardware.

In terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxx
and post the output back here (don't forget to put that output between "Code" tags).

Thanks for the fast reply, before 8 o'clock even  Much appreciated.
I see you have moved it to the SolydK BE section.

Here is the output of the command you asked me to run:

Thanks again for making this software availlable and supporting it.
My guess is that the end of XP will bring in a lot more people and work too.
Hope you can keep up with the demand.
I myself am still in the getting used to it phase and not much help as of yet, sorry :)

I see the ATI card is not supported by the fglrx drivers (the proprietary drivers for ATI cards). So, you'll have to do with the default Nouveau drivers.

If you have tried to install the above mentioned drivers, let me know, but for now I'll assume that you installed and didn't install any additional graphics drivers.

Some of these cards don't work well with the boot splash Plymouth. So, let's disable that, and see if that changes anything.
Go to the Start menu, search for Debian Plymouth Manager, and open that.
In the installed themes list, scroll completely down and select "None: no plymouth splash".
Hit "Set Plymouth theme", and reboot when done.
Login as yourself, and try to switch to a new user.

I did not install any extra drivers, just the clean install.
I did
In the installed themes list, scroll completely down and select "None: no plymouth splash".
Hit "Set Plymouth theme", and reboot when done.

After I login and then log out, I have a black screen again, with mousecursor.

The Switch-User does not seem to work now, I have a locked session and can only unlock it.

Can you logout, and login as the new user?

Start up PC, login as new user (OK), logout (Black screen again, with mousepointer).

This seems to be a hardware/kernel issue.

Make sure you don't have this file (you most probably don't have it):

Code: Select all

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

I found a possible workaround here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... 175471004/
By adding the line

Code: Select all

TerminateServer=true
to section [X-:*-Core] in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

Well, Schoelje, to my slight surprise ( I thought it was going to be a days long searching and reading session, like I have been doing several times since my Linux first steps ) IT WORKED! :D

I have put back the Plymouth settings and I HAVE A SCREEN(!) after logging out.
It works now as could be expected and I thank you very much.

I am going to add this post to my install-notes and up to the next thing..... :D

Your welcome.
Just one thing left to do for you: put "[SOLVED]" in the subject of the OP (Opening Post). That way everybody can see that the solution is there.
