Update manager reinstall grub and Thunderbird every time

Postby Fargo » 23 Apr 2014 18:38

Today the update manger showed that I had one new update to install (libopenjpeg2). So I hit the install button to update that one file. To my surprise the update manager output showed that not only was that file installed, it also appears to purge and then reinstall Grub, Thunderbird, Thunderbird-SolydXK-adjustments and other files. This causes me great concern as it seems like asking for trouble to remove and reinstall these programs every time I do an update. Not to mentioned the extra time it takes to run the update. I had noticed this before with a different update, but thought I read it wrong, so this time I am posting it here for you all to read. It sure looks to me like it is removing and reinstalling perfectly working programs.

Here is the section of output regarding the removal and reinstallation of Thunderbird.

Code: Select all

> Start thunderbird

I know thats a lot of code to read, but please glance through it to see if UM is infact purging and reinstalling Tbird and other programs. This seems like it could be an issue.

I've also noticed that I lost my installed printers during the update too. I haven't rebooted yet though since I am in the middle of some things. I only updated because that one little update looked pretty harmless.

EDIT: A reboot returned the printers.

Okay, I see, and I'll check it out tomorrow, but until I release a new UM, you can change the up= line to:

Code: Select all

up=2014.04.15

Thanks. I wondered if the UM might be looking at something like that and thinking it had to do the full update. I can update mine manually as you mentioned, but I think its a good idea to do an update of the UM or some kind of script to fix it. Thanks for looking into it.

I had more or less the same issues (apart from printer).

Code: Select all

I also noticed my swap was off (at least the BLKID was different then in my fstab). Don't know if that has something to do with reinstalling grub. I had also before with other SolydK(BE) installations...

Updated my old rig, now used by the parents with:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

No serious issues until this far except updatemanager saying updates available while there aren't any, but solution for this was already mentioned in other topic.

Not this ^^^^^, but the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Just "upgrade" will, eventually, lead to a broken install.

but again updatemanager still saying there are updates available.

Within the next few hours I will release the new ISOs, and push the current testing repository to production. That will bring you a new UM which will fix that issue (hopefully).
