Calibre and TSL/SSL

Postby drc » 21 Mar 2014 23:25

I attempted to install the latest edition of Calibre via the commands listed on their website and recieved this error:

Code: Select all

drc@drc-laptop:~$ sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibre/raw/master/setup/linux-installer.py | sudo python -c "import sys; main=lambda:sys.stderr.write('Download failed\n'); exec(sys.stdin.read()); main()"
[sudo] password for drc:
GnuTLS: A TLS warning alert has been received.
Unable to establish SSL connection.
Download failed
drc@drc-laptop:~$
I just happened to have the latest RC of Manjero XFCE on USB, so I booted it and tried the same command there...it worked just fine. So, I said "huh!?!", grabbed my SolydX64 USB stick, booted, and got the same error.

Anyone else seeing this problem with installing/updating calibre?

without direct experience of the problem :roll: i believe that you met this bug
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=686837
Found in version wget/1.14-1
Fixed in versions wget/1.14.96.38327-1, wget/1.15-1
v.1.15-1 is at the moment in debian testing (SolydXK has 1.14-5)
bliss of ignorance

Gotta love those regression bugs :evil:

Thanks...now to figure out where I hid my bottle of patience.

wget on your system appears to be broken, it is probably missing this patch: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bu.../msg00034.html

Use

curl -L
instead of
wget -nv -O-

in the installation command

Thanks GeneC, but I found my bottle of patience (really, I found that the older version in the repos was more to my liking...wasn't real happy with the "new and improved" editing module in the later versions)

I haven't upgraded the last two versions myself. The rapid pace of updates to Calibre is getting a little staggering.. :) My needs are pretty basic... ;)

"Staggering", as in weekly!!!...'though, to be fair, I can only remember one time in the past couple/three years where a update went south on me, pretty good track record.

Thanks GeneC, this worked for me.

Code: Select all

sudo -v && curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kovidgoyal/calibre/master/setup/linux-installer.py | sudo python -c "import sys; main=lambda:sys.stderr.write('Download failed\n'); exec(sys.stdin.read()); main()"
