Firefox crashes

I'm having this issue in some of my VMs after updating to FF33. Thankfully not in my main desktop (fingers crossed)

It seems to be an old bug reappearing every now and then. I saw it in Makulu a while back and reverted to Qupzilla, but it seems it affects Firefox, Thunderbird, Iceweasel and Icedove in different versions independently of the distro and DEs or WMs. Apparently it always appears after updates. Anyone else affected? Any known workaround?

Firefox and Thunderbird always do that on my machines (~/.xsession-errors has loads of those messages). It never leads to a crash, though.

SolydK64 Testing kernel 3.16-2-amd64 KDE. Firefox 33 crashed this AM, first time since upgrading to UP10. I can move the mouse pointer but hitting the browser buttons has no effect. Later on the screen shows "FF has crashed", etc.
Then same thing happened this PM after upgrading to FF 33.0.2. Wireless connection has been OK though.

Which command should I run to help with troubleshooting?

Brings up this recurring bug. And appears to be related to proprietary video driver versions vs. FF versions out of sync?
Or would be my first suspect being proprietary video drivers and some setting like disabling HW acceleration in FF worked for some. Again workaround for people that were using Nvidia drivers at the time. Until a newer version resolved that point.

One of the reasons I'm glad of running the open drivers. As the headaches of constant chasing proprietary drivers versions vs. versions of this and that Bugs! And have had zero issues with Firefox including today's update.

Well just shooting in the dark here as no real experience with the issues. But from what I have read and seen last 2 years. Seems to be a constant issue and usually my first suspect when reading about these kind of issues.

Could be way off base here so take medications and a grain of salt before reading!

Well, at least it's something to try. Since they're VMs, I can clone and bork them as much as needed. If it breaks I make another clone.

1. I started firefox from the terminal using both kernels 3.14-2 and 3.16-2, resulting in the same error message:

Firefox Profile > Start FF in default profile > then SolydXK Home page appears with FF menu and the top 3 buttons on the right being frozen. However, I am able to get into the forum to type this reply.

3. If I start out hitting the FF icon in Favourites, I don't see a bouncing FF icon as usually happens.

4. I should add that disabling application crash dump journaling doesn't work, because adding "storage=none" to "/etc/systemd/coredump.conf" still results in the same FF browser freeze problem.

5. I forgot to say I have been using nouveau instead of nvidia driver.

the idea was to create a new profile (because we are assuming that something in your default profile might be corrupted)

2. In the same link and also in some posts above, people imply that the problem exists if nvidia driver is in use.

3. It appears the problem was discussed in bugzilla.mozilla.org (Bugs#672671 & 833117), but I have not seen any workaround or solution.

By the way, I just tried hitting several parts of the Menu bar and they again show the usual options. Somehow FF33 is no longer frozen!

My celebration was premature! The browser froze again. I then created a new profile and restarted FF but failed to solve the problem. I am using FF safe mode in the terminal to access this forum. The terminal now shows the same error message:

Huh, I skip your post. Same here with a difference, launching FF doesn't even displays and it freezes the whole system at least in my VMs systems. And it also happened with Razor-Qt. But according to the bug file DEs and WMs are irrelevant.

Regarding the drivers, I dunno yet. Have to check them. I assume the VMs are on Nouveau.

Hello,

I no longer have the Glib-CRITICAL error message in the terminal. However the browser freeze problem has been on-again, off-again for Firefox 33.0.2. Recently I enabled hardware acceleration and increased the memory cache size in Firefox to 1024 MB. The relief was short-lived.

I then installed Google Chromium to avoid problems like with Firefox. Same things happen so I am wondering if there's a problem with the home page of SolydXK.

Hello again,

I just tried launching Firefox after it's updated to the latest version. Since I can't use any part of the Menu toolbar because everything is frozen, I had to terminate this application. Then I installed iceweasel via Synaptic Package Manager. When I run:

i think you should have mentioned earlier that you were running SolydXK in VMware.
usually it's not relevant but this has all the looks of openGL issues and that bit of information was relevant.
are you sure your install has proper openGL support?

it doesn't look like.
i never used VMware but with VB you need to enable 3D acceleration to have minimum openGL support.

Hi,

I tried again and this time was successful in launching Firefox version 33.1. I took the opportunity Firefox is OK for now, to copy troubleshooting info to the clipboard.
