Flash plugin [SOLVED]

Postby blert » 11 Nov 2014 23:09

This is just driving me crazy!
Yesterday it was working fine.

Today, the Flash plugin only works every now and then. I have tried FireFox, Midori, Chrome... all have the same issue.
My kids go on ABCya.com to play games... very seldom the games will load and work, sometimes the game will load and as soon as the mouse enters the "flash box" the browser freezes or gives a message that the plugin has crashed, sometimes the game wont load at all and will just crash and freeze the browser.
This wouldn't be terribly important if that was all it effected, I would just take them to sites that don't use Flash, but... I homeschool my son and the website for most of his schoolwork uses Flash.
I have tried reverting back to version 9 but the websites complain that the version is too old. I cant find version 10. Please someone give me a hand as I would hate to have to install Windows just to use a few Flash websites.

It seems to work better under my login than under the kid's login but it does still get all borked.

Oh... Happy Veteran's Day!!!

It works fine here... but how long since last update? it's Flash 11 right now. Not 10. And it's in the repos. No need to look for it elsewhere.

I keep this rig updated with the manager.
I think it might have something to do with sound related issues. I have just noticed that my volume slider is missing and nothing sound related is working... Flash crashing, MPlayer crashing too.
Whenever the Flash sites work I seem to recall always seeing the volume slider icon in the corner of the desktop. Now it's gone and I can't figure out how to get it back.
oh... How to get rid of those conflicts listed in both our 'apt show' output?

They're not conflicts, just a report of what packages will conflict if present, but they're not present. Well, everything is reported to conflict with itself, but don't worry about that.

About the sound, run apps (mplayer, etc...) from a terminal and check for the errors in the outputs. That would be a first hint to deal with it. Do you use pulseaudio, right?

firefox and chrome use different flash plugins so i would say that the problem is not with flash.

yeah, that's why I started looking at the sound issue
zerozero wrote:as i suspected :o

sudo rm /tmp
sudo mv /var/tmp /tmp
sudo mkdir -m 1777 /var/tmp
sudo reboot
done... volume control is back and sound is working again.
The flash sites have worked the couple of times I tried them in each login... have to go deal with kitchen duties now so I will be back to test it some more in an hour or so.
Thanks for your help... you saved me from having to replace the window I was going to throw this laptop through.

care to break this down for me?
something like this...
- delete the /tmp directory
- move /var/tmp to /tmp
- make a new /var/tmp with 1777 permissions
...now, why did this work and what was wrong before?

I'll update the thread title tomorrow with [SOLVED] if it stays stable throughout the school day.

yes, something like that; the previous /tmp was symlink, now is a directory

Code: Select all

zerozero@home ~ $ file /tmp
/tmp: sticky, directory
why it started giving random errors?
