Encrypted DVDs Do Not Automount in 201506

Postby danielcasey@q.com » 10 Jun 2015 03:27

I have installed SolydX 201506 which is based on Debian Jessie.

When I insert a non-encrypted movie DVD into the drive, it is automatically mounted.

When I insert an encrypted movie DVD into the drive, it is not automatically mounted.

I am able to play the encrypted movie DVD in vlc, and libdvdcss2 is installed. So my question is not about playing the DVD but rather about the failure to automount.

Here are the relevant lines from /var/log/syslog after an encrypted DVD is inserted:

Here are the relevant lines from /var/log/syslog after an non-encrypted DVD is inserted:

Code: Select all

When I run the mount command after inserting a non-encrypted DVD the following line is included in the output:

Code: Select all

/dev/sr0 on /media/daniel/__ type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=77,iocharset=utf8,uhelper=udisks2)
I have noticed that automounting of encrypted DVDs usually works in distributions that use SysVinit or upstart, but not in distributions that use systemd. However, I am not sure that systemd is related to this issue or not. I have done some research regarding polkit, udev, and udisks2, but have not been successful in finding a solution.

Granted, this issue is not a major problem as I can start vlc and play the DVD. However, it might be helpful to some new users to Linux to have the automounting work. Additionally, it would be interesting to learn why it works in some distributions and not in others (usually the new ones).
