Update LibreOffice

Postby atilla » 19 Mar 2016 08:38

Hi,

my SolydK-Installation has the LibreOffice-Version 4.x.
When we will get an update to the actual version 5.x?
The same for Firefox and so on.

Thanks for reply.

atilla: Firstly, let me welcome you to SolydXK forums and I trust that you will enjoy using this great distro. If you would like to post in the "Introduce yourself" section it will be great to hear a bit more about who you are and how you got here!

The SolydXK main editions are based on Debian Stable (currently Jessie) and so most packages remain fixed for the life of this Debian release. Accordingly, LibreOffice will not move to version 5.x until the next Debian Stable (Stretch) is released in a year or two.

However, LibreOffice 5 is in Debian jessie-backports and so you do have the option of installing this if desired but please be aware that backported packages can degrade the reliability of your system. See http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/

Firefox and Thunderbird are SolydXK packages and so these are currently upgraded independently of Debian.

Hi Zill,

thank you for detailed answer.
No, I will not install any software outside of the regular release.

SolydXK is a save distribution and therefore I will tra it to install on my older Asus laptop.

Many thanks.

Excuse ma terrible english.

I've been running the backported LO since we went stable and haven't had any issues. Experimenting with backported kernels and/or libc6 libraries always resulted in a fiasco.

lufilte: Please see the link I posted above:
https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/

Don't forget to add the sudo prefix e.g.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get -t jessie-backports install libreoffice

So lufilte you say installing backported LO via the welcome app doesn't work for you on your new installation? Did it display an error? It should still work - if it doesn't it needs fixing. You know you can call SolydX welcome anytime after initial install? Try this first before following Zills advice and please report back.
