<Solved> LibreOffice updates not really updating ?

Postby Trebor_G » 24 Feb 2017 15:15

Yesterday the Update Manager (UM) proposed a series of updates of LibreOffice (LO). I thought that these would really update LO to a more recent version (e.g., 5.x.y), but it was unfortunately not the case. LO is still v4.3.3 and has been so for a longtime despite several supposed updates performed by the UM that occurred in the recent past.

So, why are these updates made by the UM if LO version always remains unchanged and not the current one?

The SolydXK main editions are based on Debian stable (currently jessie) and this means that most packages remain functionally unchanged for the life of the Debian stable release. The only updates provided are therefore security patches and critical bug-fixes.

The current jessie version of LibreOffice is 1:4.3.3-2+deb8u6 (shown in LibreOffice as 4.3.3.2) and so this is the version used in SolydXK.

If you do need to upgrade to a later version of LibreOffice then this is possible by using the version in the jessie-backports repo, currently 1:5.2.5-1~bpo8+1 (which will show in LibreOffice as 5.2.5.1).

See https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ for further information:
Backports are recompiled packages from testing (mostly) and unstable (in a few cases only, e.g. security updates) in a stable environment so that they will run without new libraries (whenever it is possible) on a Debian stable distribution

Backports cannot be tested as extensively as Debian stable, and backports are provided on an as-is basis, with risk of incompatibilities with other components in Debian stable. Use with care!

It is therefore recommended to select single backported packages that fit your needs, and not use all available backports.

Hello Zill,

Thank you very much for the quick reply.

I followed your detailed instructions and successfully installed LO 5.2.5.

Cheers,
