(SOLVED)Not sure if grub will work on reboot

Postby patzy » 12 Nov 2018 10:23

To day there was a huge upgrade for solydK. As usual with messages about grub when upgrading, I went with the status quo.
This time there were more messages than usual. And I couldn't make sense of them.
the result being that I'm worried that if I reboot I will not get the grub menu at all.
Here is the result of "sudo blkid" if that will help.

Code: Select all

/dev/sda1: UUID="f25715d0-59c1-4f56-82b9-67d7602ab338" TYPE="swap" PARTUUID="b55a99a8-01"
/dev/sda2: UUID="8460fc78-eea0-44fa-9efa-18d403a9a04e" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="b55a99a8-02"
/dev/sda3: UUID="3fc022e9-72df-443b-a10d-f34bffd4680f" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="b55a99a8-03"
/dev/sdb1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" LABEL="Imation USB" UUID="5339-A2ED" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="59a
8e83f-01"
So can anyone please tell me if it is safe to reboot or should I do something about grub first., and if so what?

I am using a Dell 64 bit ex windows machine with UEFI (or whatever it is called) switched off.

If the machine is 'live' go to root and do an update-grub, followed by a grub-install /dev/sd(whatever disk you wish to boot from. But no partition information. (Say /dev/sdx))

This should restart your machine where you are now and enable you to read the other boot alternatives.

If something hits the fan may I recommend Supergrub2 which will make a usb start up disk that enables booting from all available points.

Good luck,
enjoy the sigh of relief.

What mhwelsh stated above and double check that your /etc/fstab has the right UUIDs from your blkid output.

@ mhwelsh
I followed your guidelines and it worked.
Grub is safely installed on sda.
Thank you for your very clear instructions.

@ Arjen
I did as you suggested and checked fstab before following mhwelsh's instructions.

My thanks to both of you. (I have saved these directions for future use!)
My heart is no longer in my mouth. :D
