unwanted bold font in Firefox ESR

Postby bennypr0fane » 15 Jun 2019 08:32

Firefox (60.7.0esr) SolydX pre-installed version (but removed SolydXK-adjustments) displays an ugly bold font on most sites:

Can't tell why it's normal on some sites though, here's the same page from English Wikipedia:

Also in my webmail in HTML-editor, the font when composing a new e-mail is always bold:

I can't change it by using the editor's controls, it always remains bold:

I'm still at Firefox-ESR 60.5 with adjustments but I can't reproduce this unless I'm at 120% zoom - which you are probably not. So no idea.

I'm on more than 100% zoom on many pages actually, so it might be related. But do you mean that yr font changes when you zoom in to 120%?

yes. Not on this forum but on wikipedia I can see a change to bold at 120%. On all Fire/Waterfoxes, including a nightly version without addons and without any configuration. No idea whether that's caused by wikipedia, by firefox or by system settings. Too many factors involved to debug. I just accept this as something beyond my control :-)

You're right, I'm seeing the exact same thing. In fact, I completely removed my FF ESR and replaced it with regular Firefox - same problem.
However, when I set zoom to 100% in my webmail (Fastmail), it *also* has the bold font - only in the composer! - which is especially annoying, because that's how the recipient is gonna see it. I can't have this!
It can't be the website's fault, because then we would see the same phenomenon in other browsers too, wouldn't we? It's many websites, not just wikipedia. Haven't found out what exactly sets apart the ones that have it from the others.
E.g. this website also has it without zooming in: https://wiki.python.org/
I think some websites define their own fonts while others tell the browser to display their system's fonts, right?

It's starts at 130% for me on python.org, not on 100%.
Different Browsers have different rendering engines and we can't change that. Websites can set their own fonts but the websites we discussed don't set valid fonts for Linux so it's back to the default which is DejaVu. You can try to change to another default and see whether that's better. You can even install lots of different fonts and set them as default. You can also change the system default fonts.

Using ESR 60.7 - I have my fonts set to use Noto Sans and I have the box that allows sites to use their own fonts UN-checked.

My monitor runs at 102 dpi

I see bold fonts on wikipedia so assume it's basic html bold - no matter what the zoom level.

WRT the bold in Fastmail - no idea - but it sounds like a caching problem. Have you tried deleting your cache - not only through the browser, but also deleting the folder in ~/.cache ?

No. I'm really busy and since the bold stuff started - as far as I remember - with me zooming on application and system level I just leave it at that. I'm sorry. Don't forget to check system settings.

UPDATE: The problem went away for me on Wikipedia with the latest Firefox 67.0.4 update - but it's still there in Fastmail and on the python.org page.
