Remastering

Postby rijnsma » 16 Jun 2013 11:40

Very important for me: I backup the system with Clonezilla.

But... when the Operating System has to be transferred to another machine, or to make
a pendrive with on it the system, an iso is needed to see if things can work on a livecd/dvd etc. And of course for a right install or when hardware is changed. (One year ago my pc
went down and I bought a new one; livedvd in and in half an hour I could work fully on
the new system. But a Clonezilla image did do the trick. HD partition also has to have
the same size or bigger. )

Remastersys (nice and simple!!) looks like it is not very active anymore with 'Fragadelic'
not happy. What simple thing can I use? mklivecd deb (with gdebi) complaints about a missing dependency.

Thanks Schoelje.
I studied often on this constructor, but I never have seen it working right.
I don't quite understand it. And I don't see what it does (no indicator. PC doesn't
show anyting ??).

What I search is a simple one-click complete backup of the OS in an ISO so I can burn
it on cd/dvd or put it on a stick and be able to start up and/or to install. It's only to make a backup livecd/dvd. I don't have to edit.

So mklivecd without the parameterlist, which I tried for years back and which went right.
Or something simple like mylivecd in another distro.
Or Remastersys (which is not available now it appears; I still have it in an Xubuntu 12.04).

Then I'm sorry, I don't have experience with that.

O.k. ;)
I'm searching on.
But this is a big loss for Ubuntu/Debian-likes.

It's is very important to be able to make a livecd/dvd as a back-up along the normal Clonezilla-images.
And so it wás until now. :?

you are aware of system-imaging http://system-imaging.blogspot.co.uk/20 ... -fork.html;
Roberto J. Dohnert is picking remastersys and following development on it; as far as i know remastersys is not dead; fragadelic decided to stop but his work will remain.
bliss of ignorance

Yes, but they are still waiting for the source from Fragadelic.

So we hope so. It is very thin one could say. :?

There might be something coming from Anthony Nordquist of SalineOS who has great plans with remastering in mind ( or in the works). Another genius at work.

See the latest update posted August 2, 2013. I guess we are still hoping.

Building new machine named Garfield II & still using an old T42 Thinkpad that's old and slow, but just keeps on going and going . . . sorta like me!

Clonezilla is perfect for imaging (but you have to learn what's in the detailes of the menu!! )
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/free ... tware.html

But it had the disadvantage that the diskspace you restore to has to be as big or bigger than the source.
(Qt4-fsarchiver is better in this one.)
You can't install an image just like that to another computer. So you have to put sensitive data
to backup places, do a fresh install etc. Image
And you can't start an image like a livecd/dvd/pendrive to see how things look in advance of an install.

So remastering is quite important and 'key' in my opinion. I have used it a lot in the distro's I used, although the last years less because of Clonezilla. But this too has been a factor for me in choosing a distro....
