[Proposal] Spotify

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 14 May 2014 17:16

Today, I've been playing around with Spotify.
The Debian packages offered by Spotify are Wheezy only. So, I had to adapt a bit. After fiddling around for a few hours I found that somebody already had beaten me to it

I then created the 32-bit package, and tried them out.
They both install fine, but...I can't play a single file: no sound. All other applications do play the same files without a problem, just Spotify not. I tested on SolydK32, and SolydK64, pulseaudio installed.

Does somebody know about that?

You can install by running:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install spotify-client

This is mine:

Code: Select all

See if this link helps:

I don't know what I am using for sound. Alsa or pulseaudio. How do I check?

Just check if it's running"

Code: Select all

$ ps -ef | grep pulseaudio
arjen 4807 1 3 17:24 ? 00:11:17 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog
The link was a dead end, I'm afraid.

Must be something with your setup.
I am listening to Wilco on Spotify right now.
I know that helps alot.

Code: Select all

danc@danc-e535 ~ $ ps -ef | grep pulseaudio
danc 4353 1 0 May12 ? 00:00:45 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog
danc 4367 4353 0 May12 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/pulseaudio/pulse/gconf-helper
danc 21351 5127 0 15:35 pts/1 00:00:00 grep --color=auto pulseaudio

I removed all pulseaudio packages, and started Spotify from terminal.
When I hit the play button, I see a message that it's using Alsa: still no sound, no error messages.

Well, if there are people out there that could use the packages, my troubles were not for nothing.
Let's see if somebody else has any ideas.

are you trying to play a local file? AFAIK you need the premium subscription for that (but i can be wrong, i have an old free spotify subscription but never used it much)

i can't play my local collection (it plays but i have no sound) but stream from the web is working fine 8-)

===
i had, however, this odd warning

Code: Select all

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  spotify-client
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 34.9 MB of archives.
After this operation, 117 MB of additional disk space will be used.
WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
  spotify-client
Install these packages without verification? [y/N] y
bliss of ignorance

Premium, eh? That could be it.
The authentication thingy is something I'll look into later today.
Thanks.

I think I solved the authentication problem (I didn't see it when installing Spotify).

I see now.
To play music from your library you have to subscribe to Unlimited or Premeium.

It probably is.
Just for testing the packages, that's a bit too much. So, I assume that the packages function if you pay for the services.

A Spotify moderator removed the download link for the packages from the post on their forum, assuming that SolydXK was a commercial company. However, he left the link to this topic. It seems that Spotify doesn't like open source very much. :o

Their spotify client works for me in solydk/lmde/mint/ubuntu without a hitch. I got 6 months free spotify premium and what they have is perfect for their service. their service is not so good when it comes to classical guitar though. all the mainstream stuff they do well but their service bite when it comes to classical guitar. only pandora gets it right. spotify keeps throwing in jazz and mind numbing new age crap. /endrant.
