Please replace ESR by Firefox standard

Postby edney » 25 Nov 2017 17:34

I bet the majority of the users does prefers to have firefox default updated than esr version on solydxk! Esr is useless and is very very outdated compared to the default version....desktop users does wants to have firefox quantum installed by default hehhe...

thanks!

Don't make assumptions you can't prove about other users. Solydxk is based on debian and debian has firefox-esr - with very valid reasons.
That being said, the Solydxk repos have firefox 57 extra for you.

Remember that SolydXK is created with small businesses in mind. In that environment stability is preferred over the latest features.

I prefer ESR all the way.
New versions of Firefox used to break my addons.
Also, I really distrust the people behind it because the funding $$$ might be attached to new features with not the final user's interest in mind.
Time will tell if this is correct, meantime it is better to be cautious.

this quantum firefox is indeed a great tempation
that being said. IMO the ESR should remain as default. user could install firefox manually if they want quantum firefox. we do have the welcome screen to assist user to do it, don't we?

I am a (veteran) desktop user. For several reasons, I do prefer the ESR version, instead of the 'last' (sometimes buggy) version, to be updated every two weeks.
My impression is that the Debian/SolydXK choice is a Smart one.

One of the reasons I like Solydx is the default use of Firefox-esr.

@OP (edney) - As you can see, your initial assumption was in error though I have no doubt your intentions were honorable. :)

You, like me and most people, are not going to be 100% satisfied with the installed suite of software delivered by the initial installation; we will be adding and/or removing various packages. In doing this, it's a simple matter to replace the firefox-esr with the "latest and greatest" with the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

The installation of firefox will replace the firefox-esr packages automagically!
