Replace Ktorrent with QTransmission

Postby fkef » 22 Jan 2014 17:43

I suggest that Ktorrent should be replaced with Qtransmission as default in SolydK

Pros Qtransmission
* Lightweight
* Easy to configure
* Transmission-gtk is already default in SolydX, more unified experience between the dists.

Cons Qtransmission
* I do not see any cons compared to Ktorrent

Pros Ktorrent
Very detailed app, which might be useful for the advanced user. However for the avarge user, it just gets overwhelming

Cons Ktorrent
* Calling kio_magnet for magnet links
* Chrome, Ktorrent and magnet links does not play nice together. They get stuck as "examine/investigating" in the notification area and you need to press the "stop button" for every torrent. transmission-qt, handles this without issues.
* Very cluttered interface

Edit: Aded cons for Ktorrent

QTransmission is a new one on me, I kinda fell for QBittorrent. I like the Qt stuff for cross-platform use, I'll give QTransmission a try. As you said, Transmission is already very simple to use.

Edit: A bit confused, I asume you mean the Debian package transmission-qt?

Code: Select all

fleabus@dv7-1270us:~$ apt show transmission-qt
Package: transmission-qt
State: not installed
Version: 2.81-1
Priority: optional
Section: net

Yes, the package name is transmission-qt.

In the menu the program name is "Qtransmission Bittorrent Client", sorry for the confusion.

Personally I just use Ktorrent without issues. As don't like default apps that may break on integration and design level.
One reason I hate running synaptic is it does not conform to desktop theme integration.

I don't prefer breaking the Design of the Desktop Environment unless I have a much needed app.
The problem here many even new may never really use torrenting or rarely like to just down an iso.
So the additional work of following Qtransimission and it's breakage may not be worth the effort.

As it's easy for ones that wish to have can easily install it themselves.

this might be a good idea actually.
in my experience transmission (gtk and/or qt) are reliable, simple to use and with a good set of features.
[for my torrenting usage - granted that way bellow most - it's all i need]
bliss of ignorance

I find ktorrent confusing, especially when I want it to stop sending. I don't use it very often and forget how it works in the meantime.

Something simpler would be good.

Works great, looks the same as the gtk. Would definitely prefer the Qt. I really like transmission's simplicity.

Coming from windows not so long ago, fell for qbittorrent as it looks so much like utorrent, which I had used exclusively before. That familiarity thing'll get you every time! Actually there isn't anything I do in utorrent or qbittorrent that I can't do in transmission. Just took some getting used to.... Familiarization? :lol:

If users has been able to get familiar with Ktorrent, getting familiar with Transmission would be a walk in the park.

True. I didn't do too bad with Ktorrent, but didn't like it so well, it kind of sent me on the hunt that ended with qbittorrent...

I'll try to keep this in mind for the next UP/ISO cycle, but remind me when the time comes.

On further thought (always dangerous :) ) I think this may be another one of those issues wherein we may be unable to please everyone. As long as we have a decent working default we're ok, as users will always install their personal preference -- Ktorrent works, and from what I can tell, many like it.

Again, just [another] thought...

I second qBittorrent.

I liked it better than QTransmission and Ktorrent.
