Locale switcher bundled in firefox adjustments doesn't work

Postby Recy » 28 Apr 2015 22:25

A firefox extension bundled in the firefox solydxk adjustments package doesn't work anymore, and some are accusing it of being adware. Maybe it should be removed?

I moved your topic to "Suggestions & Ideas".

I checked Firefox ESR (31.6.0) on the new ISOs and the Locale Switcher functioned as expected from the menu bar but not when added to the right menu (the button with the three horizontal stripes in the right top corner). There it didn't show any menu items to select, just an empty drop down menu.

I did the same for my main machine's Firefox (37.0.2) and it did function as expected from both menus.

On both instances, all add-ons were up-to-date and enabled.

I don't know about the adware. I haven't seen any ads from that add-on.

Is Quick Locale Switcher still used in solyds firefox adjustments? I don't know because I don't use them.

Quick Locale Switcher ships spyware, which is obvious from this privacy statement https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... r/privacy/. The crapware is called Wizeshoppy from a company named Superfish. You might not have seen ads but that doesn't stop them from spying.
The developer sold his Mozilla account and stopped developement on his/her addons. http://www.ghacks.net/2013/03/12/mozill ... p-changes/ already discussed this.

Maybe Locale Switcher https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... src=search would be the better alternative - if it still works?

Quick Locale Switcher is still listed as an Extension in my Firefox v41.0.1 but it is greyed-out and marked as "Disabled".

However, as I have no use for a Locale Switcher, I don't know if I disabled it or if this was done by a SolydXK package... :?

p.s. Unlike my other extensions, Quick Locale Switcher does not have a "Remove" button which implies that it arrived there via a script!

I decided to do some research: The original developer of QLS, Martin Kooij, sold this addons code (among others) to an advertizing company around 2012/2013. Their site ppclick.com is registered anonymously with GODADDY but does not respond to my browser.
I downloaded the addon code to see whether I can find anything suspicious in it but I can't (I'm no developer anyway).
http://www.systemlookup.com/FF_Extensio ... F_xpi.html says:
Aggressive versions 1.7.8.6+ have been reverted, but the add-on cannot be trusted anymore.
So the code seems to be clean atm but if solydxk-adjustments keeps on using it maybe updates for that addon should be disabled by default? So that nothing beyond Version 1.7.8.5.1-signed gets installed?
Using something else would be preferable though.
