[CLOSED] Name the Next Release

Postby Deleted User 2764 » 31 May 2015 14:59

Ok, folks, let's start something a new! This is your chance to name the next stable release of SolydXK! Yes, we all know that SolydXK is tracking Debian Stable now but we also have updates to our isos every so often to cover our own changes.

What we can do is have everyone type in a list of names (or just one if that's all you think of at the moment) in this thread. When we get close to another stable release we will create/adjust a poll and people can vote on what the next name will be out of the names that were posted. The one with the winning votes will be used for the upcoming release! Here's what Schoelje says will happen when there is a release (from the thread: http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php? ... 970#p53968) :
Schoelje wrote:The current name (in the repository) for this version is solydxk. You can see that in the line in your sources.list:

Thanks to palimmo for the idea of naming releases. :) The way I outlined above I remember from the Linux Mint forums where they did basically the same thing (or used to - I haven't been to their forums in a long while).

So, should we start off with the letter "A" and move through the alphabet? Or should we go by a certain theme? Or both? What theme should we use? Maybe go A-Z for a certain theme and when we exhaust all the letters we can change theme? palimmo suggested "Andromeda" for example which is the name of a star system (correct me if I'm wrong - I'm not great at astronomy). So we could do space themes. Or Animals? Or names of famous robots?

What do you think? Post here!

First of all, I think is interesting to find a theme. Than we can start with suggestions.

Thinking about Debian, I realized... space!
Then we have billions of names available...

I do not know if any other distro out there is already using this theme.... anyway... it doesn't matter! ;)

I'm all for stars! Despite being not great at astronomy, I do admit to being a "space case" as such. I guess that's due largely to my love of Sci-Fi (particularly Battlestar Galactica) :)

I would love though if we could also consider non-star names from Sci-Fi stuff. Like

Cylon
Galactica

Ok, I admit to being a big fan!

Wait, can we use a name of an existing distro? There already is a Cylon Linux!

Then again if we stick to just real life star systems/stars, we should be OK I would think. I'll have to put on my thinking cap!

I don't know if this would count as 'stars'? I guys these are galaxies, etc.. They are from the UFO lore (if anyone gets into that stuff at all)

Alpha Draconis or Draco (where "Reptilians" are apparently from)
Zeta Reticuli (Where the "Greys" are apparently from)

Star names are already used by Manjaro, as far as I can see.
But... who cares? :D
With the A letter... ahah... let's try
SolydXK Algol

Known colloquially as the Demon Star, is a bright star in the constellation Perseus.
The name was originally Arabic رأس الغول ra's al-ghūl "head of the ogre".

"SolydXK 8.0" works for me as it instantly shows the Debian release that SolydXK is based on. Then just track the SolydXK releases with the Debian point releases. Simples!

hahah I think we could go on years...
Difficult to agree on a single theme.
Animals is nice (but Ubuntu already uses it).
Vegetable kingdom maybe is free..
Let's try: SolydXK Durian Or the genus: SolydXK Durio

I don't know about SolydXK Squark. Sounds too "silly" for something that also could be business based? Of course we could always skip the squarks.

Maybe List of Robot Names? Then again there's some pretty silly stuff in there too (which I guess we can skip those too). :) They forgot my all time favorite show (and a few other shows) though. From Battlestar Galactica:

Muffy (Daggot/Dog) - though I wouldn't recommend SolydXK Muffy but maybe SolydXK Muffet (the "official" name of the dog)
Cyrus (from "Galactica 1980" episode "Return of Starbuck")
Red-Eye
Serpentine (Flight Leader Serpentine was in Saga of the Star Worlds mini-series)
Lucifer (IL series)
Spectre (IL series)
Andromedus (I think it's spelled that way? Was the android Cylon Group Leader in the "Galactica 1980" episode "Night the Cylons Landed")

SolydXK Spectre sure sounds neat! :)

Or how about from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century:

Twiki (Uh... wait.. no.)
Theopolis (Dr. Theopolis)
Creighton (named after the show's director. Though I named a computer we had a variant and spelled it: Kryton - that was a TRS-80 Model III with 4K RAM and Cassette tape deck!)

Or that bot Maximillion from I fogot what show that was in!

Here's more (that may or may not work):

Gort
Eve
Wall-E (or "Wallie" we could call it)
Sonny (i-Robot)
Joe (Gigalo Joe from A.I: Artificial Intelligence)
Edie (From the movie Stealth)
K.I.T.T. (Kitt) - Knight Rider
K.A.R.R. (karr) - Knight Rider
Goliath - Knight Rider

Let's not use Huey, Duey and/or Louie though (forgot what show they were in).

SolydXK Algol.
Algol was is the name of a programming language, also from arabic 'algorythm'. As is Basic, Cobol, Erlag, Fortran, Lisp, Modula, Pascal... perhaps not advisable.

For me is simpler and better Zill's suggestion: 8.1, 8.2, no need to establish connections between names and versions. Yes, I know, Squeeze, Wheezy, Jessie... but these names last 2 or 3 years!

instead of star, star constellation sounds more iconic. it also quite well known and easy to remember. as a start we can use the 12 zodiacs constellation.

I've created a poll. :) We'll run it for 30 days so that at least we have time to come up with something before next release.

I know I voted already but after reading the post and thinking about it I would like to propose we use the names of characters in the Star Wars Movies.
