want to add OSDN as Asia mirror and Japanese support

Postby balloon » 14 Nov 2015 09:36

The downloading of SolydXK needs time now for Asia users including Japan.
The cause is that there is a downloading server in Europe and America.
and a case about P2P is past in Japan, and use of Torrent is disliked.

I wanted to put a downloading server in Japan to solve it.
There is the place that is suitable for the realization:

https://en.osdn.jp/
(You may choose a native language among a header)

OSDN was run by a name "SourceForge.JP" a while ago,
There was a connection with SourceForge(.net).
It is famous as a management place of Open Source Software in Japan.

In addition, I want to use the project system here as a support place of Japan.

If agreement is provided, I perform this action; of this site think that may manage it.

Wow, that's really great!
It is one of my wishes since I started this project to have at least one Asian based mirror but it's been very difficult to find someone willing to maintain such a mirror. So, I'm very happy that you want to do that.

Did you read the page on our main site concerning mirroring?
It explains how you can use our rsync server and to automate synchronizing so that you don't have to worry about staying up to date.
Here's the link: http://solydxk.nl/contribute/mirrors/

Have you ever considered maintaining localized Japanese ISOs?
Here's a post on the subject: http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5747

OSDN has difficult realization of the mirror server.
I intend to enable downloading of the ISO first of all here.

Well, you'd only need to do that twice a year. So, perhaps that's good enough.

I showed a page:

https://osdn.jp/projects/solydxk/

At first I put 201506 ISO.

The Japanese server cannot package libdvdcss and w32/w64codecs by a legal problem.
Therefore we cannot perform the synchronization of repository in Japan.

AIUI, both these (DMO) codecs are now deprecated by SolydXK and so are no longer in the current default repos.

nope. libdvdcss is required to decode some dvd so it's not deprecated. the situation is now changed. libdvdcss is now legal for most countries. open source projects such as debian now may put it into the repository. I've heard that FOSS recommend it to debian but debian people haven't done it yet. nevertheless, europe/US and japanese have different law regarding this issue. even if libdvdcss now legal on europe and US it might still illegal on japan.

the win codec is a different matter entirely since it's a propietary codec owned by microsoft. I'm not sure about these stuff legality. AFAIK it could be distributed but there are some restriction on it. I have no further knowledge for this matter.

the easiest solution would be use rsync to clone the repository then delete both problematic files afterwards. I believe we could do this easily with some scripts.

kurotsugi: Both libdvdcss and w32/w64codecs are no longer in either the SolydXK or the Debian Jessie repos and so they are effectively deprecated. Yes, they are both still available from deb-multimedia.org but this repo is not part of a SolydXK default installation.

The legalities of what can be distributed in the US, Europe and Japan may well vary considerably and so I suggest that SolydXK should not try to distribute problematic software in countries that may have more restrictive licensing.

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy libdvdcss2
libdvdcss2:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.3.0-dmo1
  Version table:
     1.3.0-dmo1 0
        400 http://repository.solydxk.com/ solydxk/import amd64 Packages
first of all, I'd like to avoid confusion between _not used by default_ and _deprecated_. secondly, the DMO stuff and this matter are also quite different. it's true that we remove DMO in the default iso (I'm not even sure if we still rsync-ing DMO repo after we move into stable) but libdvdcss and wincodecs are necessary for playing multimedia stuff so we decided that we'll took them from DMO repo and put them in our repo.

the decision was made quite a long ago so perhaps you missed it. another part in the discussion was
distributing those files "as in the cd, usb stick or similar media" is considered illegal in some countries. but put them in the repo is legal since we are not 'distributing' them by doing that
hence, you still found some distro have them in their repo. in this case we simply following our older brother step. the discussion at that time was specifically about the legality on europe and US. at that time we're sure that putting those stuffs on our repo is legal.

that being said, at that time we haven't discuss the legality issue on asian countries. either because it's not worth and we don't have enough source to discuss it. on most countries it's legal (either distributing them or put them in the repo). however, japan sometimes have unique law which only apply for japanese. I'd say we can, as you suggested, delete these stuffs on japan repo. it's a good suggestion but perhaps we need to look into this matter deeper :3

I can confirm that it is in the solydxk repo (not just in dmo, although I have both) and it should stay there. If there is a problem in Japan then balloon will have to delete it, which should work fine with a script executed after every rsync. Or s/he just leaves everything as s/he has it now.

These packages are not part of the ISOs and must be installed by the user if he/she needs them. The welcome screen facilitates this for new users but still it shows a legal warning.

It is not ISO that I take a problem.
I confirm that there is not it in the ISO.

It is this package of repository that I take a problem now:

Ah, you're talking about synchronizing the SolydXK repository.

Well, technically there is an easy solution for that: after synchronizing the repository you could remove the packages with reprepro. The server needs to have rsync and reprepro installed to accomplish that. You could also delete the deb files manually but the would still be listed in the repository database resulting in a 404 error if someone wants to install those packages manually.

[EDIT]
For reference. If you want to remove a package from a reprepro repository:

Code: Select all

reprepro remove solydx-8 libdvdcss2
Note: solydx-8 is the current solydxk version and will change with the next Debian stable transition.
