solydk 9 btrfs

Postby cpatrick08 » 14 Mar 2017 16:16

I would like the option to format / partition as btrfs from installer as opposed to having to go to gparted to do it.

I formated my / partition as btrfs in gparted but it's forcing me to choose a filesystem to format / as in installer. I will NOT run Solydk until this is fixed, and I really want to run your OS.

I invite you to take a look at the sources and help me out to implement your feature request: https://github.com/SolydXK/live-installer-3

This sounds like an interesting topic and we had a report from somebody trying with btrfs before.
Problem is that schoelje would probably need to apply changes to the installer and I'm not sure he will have time to do that now. Main priority at the moment is to manage the transition to stretch.

Can you tell me what your main reasons for using btrfs are?

Again, too slow  :-(

It was a lot easier than I thought!

In the live session, open a terminal and update the live installer:

Code: Select all

apt update
apt install live-installer-3
Start the live installer and when you've selected the partition for root (/), double click on that partition to edit the partition and select btrfs as format:

GParted after reboot:

It seems that mkfs.btrfs is not part of btrfs-progs in Stretch. So, this only works in SolydXK 8 (Jessie).

[EDIT]
Ah, they moved it from /sbin to /bin...

The live installer also works in SolydXK 9.

What do you mean by fried? Is it data loss, total file system corruption? How did it happen?

I have been using btrfs for a few years on several computers, I haven't had any problem with it. I put btrfs on the entire drive with no partition tables (no GPT or MBR etc), maybe that would make some difference as that's really how it's meant to be used because advanced file systems like btrfs and ZFS have built-in features that work like partitions.
