Hi FromUK

Postby Severnside » 30 Aug 2013 10:55

Hello everyone,

I am Peter from the UK, I have been using Linux for about 6 years now as my primary OS. Although I am far from a experienced user, especially when it comes to the command line :? My first distro was Mepis by the way :)
Just lately have been using Kubuntu 12.10, then Linux Mint 14 KDE. When I saw new the new version Kubuntu 13.04 i thought I would give it a spin, but it gave me to major headaches that it would not shutdown or reboot. And secondly could not mount any USB or external usb drives. Went back to KDE Mint 14, all ok again. Mint 15 KDE gets released so I try that, and same thing as in latest Kubuntu, in meantime Netrunner 13,06 gets released so I try that, and low and behold exactly the same problems! Last few days read about SolydK, so thought cool, tried the live session first and same problems again, arghhh
One over thing I did try to install SolydK(latest iso) on my computer but when it came to login I got GRUB failures every time so could not boot in to anything.
Anyhow on all the latest distros I tried all the internet fixes for shutdown and USB problems worked to no avail. I am now running KWheezy 7.1, great little distro and everything works on my computer again.I am not writing this to put down SolydK, as I think it is going places and looks a fantastic concept. I do hope with future releases that I will be able to enjoy SolydK on my computer.

so hopefully will be sticking about in the near future :)

Hi Severnside, and welcome to our forums!
This is the first time that somebody introduces himself to say he's not using SolydXK :D
The next UP will have a new kernel.
Perhaps that'll fix your issues.

SolydXK needs you!

hi Severnside 8-) welcome to our forum
it's odd that all the recent distros have issues in your hardware; from your description all is fine until a certain kernel version (ubuntu 12.10/mint14 >> kernel 3.5) but it fails with the newest releases (ubuntu 13.04/mint 15 use kernel 3.8, our latest release uses kernel 3.9)
what kind of hardware do you have there?
if you don't mind booting the SolydXK liveDVD can you please share the output of

Code: Select all

Thanks Everybody :D

Nice to be back (again) :D

Everything running very smoothly, so for anyone new with install problems always worth double checking the hardware, funny though how older kernels were more tolerant to the usb glitch :?
