For KDE users: Animated DreamDesktop

Postby coffeetime » 05 Nov 2013 00:33

Available in 1080p HD

Iframe is not allowed anymore. Click here to watch the movie.

Edit: I hope you don't mind, if I post this here? :oops:
I did not test it with SolydK, but I guess it should work

8-) ohh, please ;)
how stable is it? still very cpu-demanding? i heard that earlier versions were a bit to the heavy side.

It is pretty CPU intensive unfortunately.

http://www.jarzebski.pl/projekty/dreamdesktop.html

I tried something like that with a-desk about a year ago, not in SolydXK, and my CPU usage was around 15% at 720p, more for a 1080p video. I am waiting to see what will happen when mesa 9.2 drivers arrive, which along with Kernel 4.10 provide hardware acceleration through VDPAU for AMD open source drivers out of the box. I don't have Nvidia and i do not know how it works there with propriety drivers.

Here is what i did back then, but it is only useful if you want to show off, not for everyday use.

Iframe is not allowed anymore. Click here to watch the movie.

I seldom see my desktop since I always have a couple of programs open. But I sure wish that Linux had a couple of video screen savers like this. The included screen savers suck on every distro I have ever tried. Its just eye candy I know, but screen savers are one place where Windows really shines.

stelios
so we are lucky 8-)

Code: Select all

zerozero@home ~ $ inxi -SG
System: Host: home Kernel: 3.10-3-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: KDE 4.11.3 Distro: SolydXK 1 testing

           GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ivybridge Desktop GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 9.2.2
mesa 9.2 made into the upcoming UP.

==
the compilation in K has a small hurdle (and it's kinda pointed out in the dreamdesktop homepage with the ffmpeg dependency)
first attempt finishes with

Code: Select all

CMake Error: The following variables are used in this project, but they are set to NOTFOUND.
Please set them or make sure they are set and tested correctly in the CMake files:

FFmpeg_LIBRARIES

the clue for me was in FindFFmpeg.cmake

Code: Select all

IF(FFmpeg_LIBAVFORMAT_FOUND AND FFmpeg_LIBAVDEVICE_FOUND AND FFmpeg_LIBAVCODEC_FOUND AND FFmpeg_LIBAVUTIL_FOUND AND FFmpeg_LIBSWSCALE_FOUND AND STDINT_OK)

            #${FFmpeg_STDINT_INCLUDE_DIR}/libswscale

    ENDIF()

    SET(FFmpeg_LIBRARIES

        ${FFmpeg_LIBAVUTIL_LIBRARIES}
        ${FFmpeg_LIBSWSCALE_LIBRARIES}
        #CACHE  STRING  "docstring"
installing those dev libraries (in a system that already has most of the dev stuff installed) resulted in

Code: Select all

zerozero@home ~/builds/dream-desktop/plasma-wallpaper-dreamdesktop/build $ cmake .. -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix`

@coffeetime --

... the extrasolar channel is yours?

Absolutely beautiful work. Amazing. I am so old....

@everyone --

I hope everyone has seen SloydXK Screenies #2!

I'm always a latecomer to any kind of bling-related stuff.
KDE itself is really pulling me in though. For me that's saying a lot! :lol:

macstar,
did you compiled it? did it finished with any kind of errors?

you can get the source from here http://www.jarzebski.pl/projekty/dreamdesktop.html and the compilation instructions are also there

Code: Select all

cd plasma-wallpaper-dreamdesktop
mkdir build
cd build
cmake .. -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix`
make
sudo make install
after that you enable it like this

the first error you are getting is not related with ffmpeg

Code: Select all

zerozero@home ~ $ apt contains KDE4Workspace
kdelibs5-dev: /usr/share/kde4/apps/cmake/modules/FindKDE4Workspace.cmake
kde-workspace-dev: /usr/lib/cmake/KDE4Workspace
kde-workspace-dev: /usr/lib/cmake/KDE4Workspace/KDE4WorkspaceConfigVersion.cmake
kde-workspace-dev: /usr/lib/cmake/KDE4Workspace/KDE4WorkspaceLibraryTargets-debian.cmake
kde-workspace-dev: /usr/lib/cmake/KDE4Workspace/KDE4WorkspaceConfig.cmake
kde-workspace-dev: /usr/lib/cmake/KDE4Workspace/KDE4WorkspaceLibraryTargets.cmake
you need kdelibs5-dev and kde-workspace-dev

==
the error with ffmpeg i also saw it in my build
- you don't need another ffmpeg, the version supplied in the repos is good.
- you need to go to the list in my post above (this http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php? ... 966#p18929) and install the libav* dev lib that are listed in FindFFmpeg.cmake

libavformat-dev is shown as defective package when i try to install via synaptic. this is after a fresh reboot. i get no error when reloading the packages lists.

i dont even try the others because they are most likely also shown as defective. ideas?

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
says that plasma-widget-cwp could be updated but depends on kdelibs5 but is not installable.

do i really have to remove that one?

do not use upgrade! it will break your installation sooner than later.

what is the output of

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
