that was some remnant of upgrade process. if you never use unattended upgrades you can uninstall it and delete those files.

I missed to report that synaptic-pkexec is broken due to policykit. when I got the message, the patch was underway but I don't know whether if it already reach testing or not.

Well my Synaptic's is still dead so I guess the patch is still making its way down the line

I was wondering why I wasn't getting any updates.
Looks like we are in a freeze:

Code: Select all

Key release dates

    [2016-Nov-05] Transition freeze
    [2016-Dec-05] Mandatory 10-day migrations
[2017-Jan-05] Soft freeze (no new packages, no re-entry, 10-day migrations)
    [2017-Feb-05] Full freeze

As always, Debian 9 "Stretch" will be released "when it's ready".

Not the same type of freeze as last time, in November 2014. The transition freeze doesn't affect 'small' updates (for varying values of 'small'). I've still had daily updates after the 5th. Today I got 10 new packages (mainly python stuff).

AFAIK transition freeze means that there's no more system transition. the transition process is quite long (GCC and gnome transition could take months) so they need to stop the transtition now so that they could meet the actual freeze schedule on januari.

the debians team seems take a different approach in this freeze period (I never see them so strict like now ) so the schedule might looks different than before. I haven't check this period freeze rules in detail but AFAIK the real freeze period will started on january. that's when the team will focused on bug squashing. the gap between each step seems very strict. it depends on lot of stuff but I'd say, perhaps we could get new debian release on february or march.

though, that was a really rough calculation. it's just that everything seems quite stable now so an early release on februari is posible.

Donc après la période de gel qui dure un certain temps, y-a-t'il une commande particulière à effectuer après cette période genre 'apt-get dist-upgrade' ou autre pour faire les mise à jour en pensant que SolydX EE 9 est rolling...

no, there's no special process. we only need to sit and wait until stretch got released. after that we can update our system as usual. that's why we call it rolling release. let it rolls and enjoy it :3

however, after the freeze period is over there will be a massive update in the first month. the situation might be a lil bit chaotic. user usually advised not update the system/or be extra cautious in the first and second week. mayor breakage usually happened in these period.

Kernel 4.8 arrived today. No issues so far, but that's with Intel graphics.

The apt-listchanges output had this:

Code: Select all

linux-latest (76) unstable; urgency=medium

  * From Linux 4.8, several changes have been made in the kernel
configuration to 'harden' the system, i.e. to mitigate security bugs.
Some changes may cause legitimate applications to fail, and can be
    reverted by run-time configuration:
    - On 64-bit PCs (amd64), the old 'virtual syscall' interface is
disabled. This breaks (e)glibc 2.13 and earlier. To re-enable it,
      set the kernel parameter: vsyscall=emulate
    - On most architectures, the /dev/mem device can no longer be used to
access devices that also have a kernel driver. This breaks dosemu
and some old user-space graphics drivers. To allow this, set the
      kernel parameter: iomem=relaxed
    - The kernel log is no longer readable by unprivileged users. To
allow this, set the sysctl: kernel.dmesg_restrict=0

No issue here either and I also have a Intel chipset but I did have this pop up while the install process was going on

Code: Select all

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.8.0-1-amd64
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_01.bin for module i915
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_guc_ver9_14.bin for module i915
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/bxt_guc_ver8_7.bin for module i915
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/skl_guc_ver6_1.bin for module i915
My graphic chipset is

Code: Select all

mit@lunar1 ~ $ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
           Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Desktop GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 12.0.3
UPDATE

After a little googling it seems to be something to do with the kernel referencing firmware for the Intel graphics but Intel has not yet released the firmware, could not find a Debian bug number but found several mention of it from Ubuntu users (or at least that is what they said)

Updated tonight and noticed some i915 driver(?) in the updates and when the update finished there were no errors as before so I guess that means it is sorted.

Update 2:
After reinstall I have dual monitors working just fine. I have not updated the system yet.
I am not sure what update is killing dual monitors but it must be the drivers.
I notice below that the drive says ati, radeon which is working
The one not working says ati, vesa

Info from working install:
dcihon@solydk64ee:~/Downloads/pminstaller-0.2.2$ uname -a
Linux solydk64ee 4.6.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.6.4-1 (2016-07-18) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Tobago PRO [Radeon R7 360 / R9 360 OEM]
           bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 1002:665f
           Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD BONAIRE (DRM 2.43.0 / 4.6.0-1-amd64, LLVM 3.8.1)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 12.0.4 Direct Rendering: Yes

Update 1:
DO NOT INSTALL AMD GRAPHICS DRIVER.
Ended up with a Blank screen that I could not do anything with.
Now re installing SolydK64EE

Just bought a new Dell Desktop and installed SolydK64EE on it.
Problem is getting dual monitors to work with it. Specs follow shortly.
It is odd after initial install I had dual monitors working just fine.
Then I did a update and dist-upgrade.
After rebooting dual monitors gone.
Here is specs:

since ati is working, you can try blocking radeon. IIRC amd chips got new opensource driver called amdgpu. this might caused conflict in your system.

In looking into the updates that my machine wants to do I don't see any radeon files.
Could it be the kernel update that is breaking it?
