ISO testing 201512

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 07 Dec 2015 19:33

I've built new ISOs: http://downloads.solydxk.nl/nightly/
These ISOs are the next release candidates.

I've attached a Calc sheet with test cases to help you to test.

UM: Why do you use a red "don't do this" sign as icon for install? This seems unintuitive.

I don't know what you're talking about :(
I have two icons with red in them: warning, or emergency update.

Maybe it means that one icon is missing? The one for "install"? It's also smaller.

The tray icon does not seem to have any click-behaviour - not only left click but also right click - edit: and then left or right click - does nothing. Right click shows the menu but I can't select anything. OK maybe that's what you meant by "left click not working".

The icon is easy to solve. That's an icon theme issue.

However, I cannot reproduce your right-click problem. Even if I change all themes it still works.

Can you open a terminal and run these commands:

Code: Select all

killall python3
updatemanager -t
With the terminal still open, right-click on the icon and select "Updatemanager".
Copy and paste the terminal output here if any.

There wouldn't happen to be any web seeds for the torrent download, would there? I see 0 seeds online.

So is the faint circle with 3 horizontal dots the new Update Manager icon? If you run a transparent task bar, the icon vanishes against a gray wallpaper - like the official Solyd wallpaper, for instance.

I also got this new icon in the newest version of Update Manager. My panel is vanilla-Xfce grey, i.e. also the perfect background to almost make the icon vanish against.

Whatever color I choose, there will be somebody with the same background color.
I'm not that good a programmer and I don't know how to show another icon depending on the background color.

^^ Understood, but perhaps having the icon on a contrasting square (or round) background (say, black) would make it more visible regardless of background color.

I can foresee potential problems with new users if they can't see the icon on the default color of the panel, for example (as pointed out by bennypr0fane above).

Yeah, I guess i should be enough to just set the default icon set and panel/wallpaper up in a combination that has decent enough contrast. Whatever other combination users try out can be at their discretion/their problem ^^
My panel however is not the default color of a fresh SolydX install, but what Xfce has as default when it's installed from the repos, next to another desktop (LXQt, in my case)

^^ Ah, I misunderstood about the default panel. It's been a long, long time since I've seen a default panel :D .

I still think more contrast on the icon would be better, but if it's not a problem on a default install, no big deal then.

@grizzler
Thanks, I'll take a look tomorrow

@all
I've updated the Update Manager: hopefully the icons are more visible now and I've added an icon legend in the right-click menu.

Thanks, Schoelje, that was fast! I think the new UM icon is much better.

Damn I love this distro!

Code: Select all

killall python3
updatemanager -t
fixed the right-click issue, thank you.

And wow what a fancy "install" button we have now! I liked the one we had before better but I'm not the fashion police so I'll get used to it.
The tray icon is still grey on grey though and I have the default colours SolydX came with (I never changed anything there). It's barely visible, legend or not. Especially "There are updates available" should use some kind of signal color, grey just doesn't cut it, especially when your eyes get older. Maybe if the arrow was blue instead of grey?
I don't really know how these things work .... does the icon have to be part of a theme or are they stored in your program code somewhere? I had a look at github and somehow I'm to stupid to find anything there, the latest commit I could find was 18 days ago.
If you point me to the right place I could put blue color into the arrow and you could see whether that would be better.

In code: /usr/share/solydxk/updatemanager/icons
Github is not yet updated. I'm changing things rapidly in the past few days.

I'll change the color of the install arrow and upload everything to Github now that at least there are no significant bugs.

@grizzler
I've created a separate topic for the Installer issue: http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=6030

Is there a way to simplify the setup (with a minimum of partitions) so that I can debug the installer?
