I crashed & burned............ok slightly singed

Postby xendistar » 27 Jan 2017 17:50

I was using my PC around lunch time today no issue, I then went back to work which meant swapping to my Windows PC (via KVM), went to go back to my SolydX PC tonight (17:21) and it had locked up. I attempted to ssh into the PC but connection was rejected. In the end I had to push the button, PC came back up ok.

I looked through the logs and found this in the kern.log

Code: Select all

Jan 27 16:16:34 lunar1 kernel: [69915.840213] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 6:0:0x85fffffc, in Xorg [1036], reason: Hang on render ring, action: reset
Jan 27 16:16:34 lunar1 kernel: [69915.840214] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
Jan 27 16:16:34 lunar1 kernel: [69915.840215] [drm] Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
Jan 27 16:16:34 lunar1 kernel: [69915.840215] [drm] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
Jan 27 16:16:34 lunar1 kernel: [69915.840216] [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.
Jan 27 16:16:34 lunar1 kernel: [69915.840216] [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
Jan 27 16:16:34 lunar1 kernel: [69915.840244] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang
To me that looks like an issue with the Intel graphics? I have looked in /sys/class/drm/card0/error but log is empty

I did an update on the 24th Jan which included the new 4.9 kernel (the PC was rebooted for the new kernel) and also updated on the 25th & 26th where on each update I got the Intel firmware error. Are there any other logs I should check? Anything else I should check?

the missing firmware message is simply warning and should not interferee the the device functionality. it's just a minor issue which indicated that intel haven't published their driver for newest hardware yet. which means, older hardware should works just fine. you can read some info here https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=6570.0

it seems that there was some regression in the kernel. the content of /sys/class/drm/card0/ have been deleted on reboot so it's now gone. there are indeed some regression in 4.9 https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=6497.0

did this issue happened frequently?

Hi Kurotsugi, thanks for your input, This is the first time for a long time my PC has locked up and it has not done it since the issue on Friday. When I have had issues in the past I have been able to SSH into the PC but this time it simply refused connection. Hopefully this will just be one of those quirky one off's.

UPDATE
OK I forgot this when I wrote the reply above but having it just happen again reminded me.

My PC is on a KVM with two other PC's (windows 10, and Ubuntu Studio) Yesterday I came back to my SolydX PC having been in Windows 10 and I was at the login screen, the PC had not rebooted but my used had been logged out (I have Gkrellm running which shows the uptime). Now this afternoon I had been on my Windows PC and I come back to my SolydX PC and again I have been logged out (I actually went backward and forwards beteewn the two PC's several times, the last time on the windows PC was about 2 hours. I use the buttons on the KVM to change between PC's ( I don't use keyboard shortcuts). Any idea why I am being logged out or where I can look for clues??

I don't know every regression in the kernel so I'm not sure what happened. it's related with the kernel so the chances are we can't do much about it. as workaround you can use the old kernel until we got new kernel.

Well I just come back to my PC, screensaver was running but the system itself was locked up solid, no respondse to the keyboard (other than coming out of the screensaver), no response to SSH from another PC. So now I have rebooted and chose the 4.8 kernel, will see if the issue continues or not.

Updated to the latest 4.9.0-2 kernel the other night so I rebooted (as it was a kernel update) and found I still having this problem with the 4.9 kernel, still have the hang line in the kernel log

Code: Select all

Apr 8 08:47:24 lunar1 kernel: [127838.368582] drm/i915: Resetting chip after gpu hang
The latest apt update brought more Kernel 4.9.0-2 updates last night but also brought the Intel missing firmware error as well

I again reverted back to 4.8.0-2 kernel which does not have the issue.

Really only posting encase it help anybody else because once the new Debian version is released I will do a new install and see if that resolves the issue.

Tim
