ee 9

Two comments.

The sources list entries which contain 'httpredir' are extremely slow. Removing that section of the addresses restores what appears to be normal speeds.

KDE is much slower than the stable version. With ee 9 the start up is a lot slower and the Shutdown seems to take a life time. I have yet to find the 'restart' button.

I appreciate that these are unquantified features but has any body else noticed?

Language problems.
The sources list entries which contain 'httpredir' are extremely slow.
When replaced by deb http://debian.org/debian stretch.... or something similar the download speed is normalised.

The hostname httpredir.debian.org redirects to static.debian.org (as does deb.debian.org, which replaces httpredir) and static.debian.org and plain debian.org appear to use the same set of five IPv4 and four IPv6 addresses. So I don't think switching things like that will always work as well for everyone.

The sources/packages page for the EEs has some info about using a local mirror directly, i.e. using "http://ftp.cc.debian.org", where cc is the two character country code.

My comments are entirely subjective.

The KDE system is a lot slower, especially shutting down.
I have yet to find the Restart button.
Xfce does not appear to have changed.

Downloading/updating takes a lot longer using httpredirect with both KDE and Xfce and a lot of the extra time appears to be the time to work out what it should be doing..
It says 'Waiting' for up to a minute on httpredirect but just gets stuck in with http://debian.org.

The preconfiguration tries to find the best compromise for a userbase scattered around the planet. Just change /etc/apt/sources.list to point at the repos you prefer.

There used to be a function to test for repo speed in the update managers settings but this will not be accessible anymore in stretch. Is there another tool for this? Or a command line?
