SolydXK 10 Testing [updated: 31-07-2019]

I have uploaded the release candidates.

You can download the ISOs here: https://downloads.solydxk.com/nightly/

If you have the time to test the ISO, please use the attached document below to report your findings.

I have also created and attached a script to upgrade a SolydXK 9 system to SolydXK 10.
It was tested with the 201902 ISOs but more testing is needed.
If you have problems with the script, please compress (tar or zip) the log file (~/solydxk10-upgrade.log) and attach it to your post.

Below I will keep a list of things that need to be done before releasing. Feel free to help out ;)

[TODO]
IN PROGRESS, DONE, WON'T FIX
  • Update: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=774
  • Chromium repeatedly asks for keyring password. (1)
    viewtopic.php?t=7585&p=70604#p70604
  • Exim4 service is enabled (not needed) (1)

    Code: Select all

    apt purge exim4*
  • OpenVPN service is enabled (not configured) (1)

    Code: Select all

    apt purge openvpn
  • FreshClam causes boot delay and service keeps running after disabling. (1)
    > Boot delay was caused by not being able to update the virus database on boot.
    Can be fixed in solydxk-system-adjust.service
  • Welcome screen - does not save selection when moving to another page. (1)
  • SolydX - wallpaper selector disabled (1)
Don't know what he's talking about - I have no problem changing wallpapers.
  • Upgrade script - sudo apt-get --allow-releaseinfo-change update
    Add "Acquire::AllowReleaseInfoChange "true";" to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/80solydxk-apt
  • ISO - unmount ISO in VM after installation when rebooting (low priority ).
    Use https://github.com/linuxmint/live-insta ... aller-stop.
    > This messes up upgrade of live-installer-3 in a live session.
  • ISO - kernel or lightdm issue: boot into blinking cursor or blanc screen.
    Found on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comment ... _blinking/
  • ISO - keyboard layout not set when selecting localized boot.
    Use kernel parameters: keyboard-layouts=de,en locales=de_DE.UTF-8
  • ISO - add country flag to localized boot menu items (low priority)
  • USB Creator - Add partitioning of USB.
  • Waterfox - no icon
Icon path change in waterfox.desktop: /opt/waterfox/browser/chrome/icons/default/
  • Live Installer - pre-select language
When booting into language, live installer does not pre-select that language resulting in error:

    Code: Select all

Did you check the preview ISO? I can see the icon.

No, what's the preview ISO?

Where is it?

I installed 10 a few months ago and have been just doing updates.

I downloaded the Solydx ISO and verified the sha256sum. I was unable to boot into it in Virtualbox. Using dd to put on a usb also failed to provide a successful boot. I tried a second ISO download on a different computer and had the same issue.

At attempted boot the trials fail with: "FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted."

Will try Solydk next...

I see...only EFI works.
I'll take a look at it asap.

I think I solved the legacy boot issue.

There is one thing I found: the integrity check on the legacy boot ends in an error while the integrity check (with the same parameters) in Grub ends successfully. I have only tested in Virtualbox. So, I cannot rule out VB. I've searched the net but didn't find anything at all.

Here's the error:

You can download the new ISOs from the links in the OP.

I install solydx_10_64_201905.iso on a USB thumb drive using the USB Creator.

How do I test it?

When using the USB Creator what will it accomplish when it's finished?

Thanks

Don't use the USB Creator for these ISOs.
Whatever I do, I always end up with a failed boot and the same text I mentioned above.

I can boot in VB with the new iso, but after a fast (normal) boot sequence the screen change to black and nothing happens in a long time. No error message. Finally I have to close the virtual machine.

Odd, I can boot both ISOs normally in VB, but when I want to boot from USB (either with USB Creator or dd) I get the black screen.

When I boot the USB with the debug kernel argument, I see this in boot.log"
panic 'Unable to find a medium containing a live file system'
The boot ends in initramfs prompt. If I run "ls" to see what's there, everything seems fine.

I've been at it for the past two days and so far I haven't had any success.

I've got a virtualbox install of SolydX10 that functions great after a couple shutdowns and some customization. Looks great!

I completed a hardware install to existing partitions on another system, and that was also a success. Installed on an AMD chipset with an A10 GPU. Live system and install worked fine. Used dd to a USB for the install.

Now I'm completing a new install using the edit partitions option and will try installing a bunch of stuff from the welcome screen as well as Synaptic. I'll go through the test spreadsheet and report results tomorrow.

I installed Solydx_10_64_201905.iso on a usb drive anyway and used USB-Creator that is on my PC now which is SolydX EE 10 64-bit that I installed a month or two ago.

Well anyway, it worked and I booted into the thumb drive live session and looked around.

The first time I used the USB-creator it froze when it was coping the ISO to the usb drive so I quit and deleted everything on the drive and started over.
The second time I started it from a console and everything worked as designed.

I had to put the ISO in my home folder to get the usb-creator to see the iso because it didn't see it when it was in a different folder.

Other than that the USB-Creator worked just fine.

I cannot get any of them to boot from USB.
Tried with several pen drives, used dd, usb-creator and multiusb...no luck.

I cannot seem to find out why it's not working for me, but I'm happy you were able to install.
Although that adds to the mystery.

I've updated the ISOs.

I've decided to abandon usb-creator. It's too buggy and mostly it doesn't work. I still have the best results with dd. So, I removed usb-creator from the solydxk-10 ISOs and created a script to help users to write an ISO to USB from dolphin/thunar.

The script /usr/bin/iso-usb is provided by solydxk-system (check iso-usb -h to see more info) and the adjustments packages integrate it into dolphin/thunar. You just need to right-click an ISO to select the action. There is one minor inconvenience which I've posted on stackoverflow.

These ISOs now normally boot from USB (I used dd to do so) on my main machine but not from my laptop. I found a intel-microcode bug that exactly describes what happens on that laptop. If I ever find the time I will try to report a bug on Debian buster.

I tried to add the "dis_ucode_ldr" kernel line parameter as described here but that didn't change a thing.

Perhaps you might have noticed that the EFI Grub menu has been themed now. The live ISOs can now select your preferred locale before you boot the live session. This means that I don't have to build language specific ISOs anymore.

[EDIT]
For reference: I could boot the 201902 ISO on my laptop.
intel-microcode: 3.20180807a.2~deb9u1

No full test reports yet, but I tried the live ISOs in a VBox VM and on USB (legacy hardware). No issues so far, neither booting nor checking the integrity of the medium.

To write the ISOs to USB sticks, I used the last version of UNetbootin that was available in Debian before it was removed (608-1) and that still worked OK. The boot menu looked a bit weird (had all available languages listed and some junk at the end). I'll try 661 from github later to see if that handles the menu better.

Edit
No, using 661 makes no difference. The menu seems OK until the last entry in the syslinux.cfg file and then starts again with heavily corrupted text. Some kind of buffer overflow? A menu with over 500 entries is a bit much...
The properly formatted bit does work, though. I tried the nl_NL entry and all texts came up in Dutch.
