Can't start NetworkManager

Hello,

I'm on SolydK and I've recently started having trouble with NetworkManager. It simply won't start.
The networking widget in the tray displays "NetworkManager not running". This started occuring after I've added a DSL connection through the GUI.

As you can see below, I've tried to manually start the service, but it's no use. I also don't get any error messages to investigate (or maybe I don't know where to look for them).

Code: Select all

masterf-pc ~ # whoami
root
masterf-pc ~ # service network-manager status
[FAIL] NetworkManager is not running ... failed!
masterf-pc ~ # service network-manager start
[ ok ] Starting network connection manager: NetworkManager.
masterf-pc ~ # service network-manager status
[FAIL] NetworkManager is not running ... failed!
masterf-pc ~ # NetworkManager
masterf-pc ~ # echo $!

masterf-pc ~ # ps -ef | grep -i net
root 28 2 0 12:04 ? 00:00:00 [netns]
root 14744 14056 0 15:29 pts/1 00:00:00 grep --colour=auto -i net
I can get my Internet connection to work by manually doing "ifconfig eth1 up" and "dhclient eth1", but I would really want to get NetworkManager working again. I've also tried removing and reinstalling all it's packages (not Complete removal though).

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
dpkg -l |grep network
systemctl list-units |grep etwork
systemd-analyze critical-chain
in case if you're not using systemd yet you can skip the last two command and replace the command with "nm-applet".

Here's the output for the first two commands. I'm not running systemd.
I can't find any "nm-applet" command on my system.

you can install it by "sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome".

I've tried the "sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome", but it wants to pull in 111 packages (most of the Gnome desktop, I guess). Is it that important? I'd prefer not to install over 100 new packages I probably won't use.

Also, as far as I understand it's just another front-end that uses the NetworkManager daemon.

it's "just" the front-end of network-manager but it also "the only" stable frontend :3
there's only two network manager front-end in debian (this package and plasma-nm). you can use plasma-nm as an alternative but it's a new package and might not stable as gnome's nm-applet.

anyway, 100 dependencies is too much. something is fishy about your apt setting. please try to turn off recommended package setting. gnome's nm-applet indeed have lot's of dependencies but it's less than 30.

I tried it without the consider recommended packages as dependencies setting, but it was the same.

Anyway, I found a way to get it to work: I removed all the connections from /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections. After a restart, NetworkManager was working. It seems if I set a DSL connection it crashes when I try to connect. For now, I'm letting my router handle it and just using regular DHCP. It's not optimal since I have a 1 Gbps connection but the router can't handle that much.

I'll try setting up the DSL again next week.

I just installed the latest update pack and my DSL connection works now.
