Having a problem with Static IP and Resume.

Postby rozen » 04 May 2013 04:04

I am in the process of configuring my Solydx installation. In a nutshell, I can get my machine to boot with a specified static IP address but when I put the machine to sleep and then resume it reverts to the previous DCHP address.

I seemed unable to get anything useful done with Menu->Settings->Network, so following some google response, I edited /etc/network.interfaces to be as follows:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface

auto eth0

iface eth0 inet static
#set your static IP below
address 192.168.0.30
#set your default gateway IP here
gateway 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255

When I reboot and login I get:

sudo ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:19:d1:79:34:da
inet addr:192.168.0.30 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::219:d1ff:fe79:34da/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:957 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:814 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:572851 (559.4 KiB) TX bytes:89473 (87.3 KiB)
Interrupt:21 Memory:dffe0000-e0000000

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:499 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:499 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:63022 (61.5 KiB) TX bytes:63022 (61.5 KiB)

If I then suspend my system and resume ifconfig gives me:

sudo ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:19:d1:79:34:da
inet addr:192.168.0.100 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::219:d1ff:fe79:34da/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:2265 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1983 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:1457104 (1.3 MiB) TX bytes:230632 (225.2 KiB)
Interrupt:21 Memory:dffe0000-e0000000

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:630 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:630 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:82590 (80.6 KiB) TX bytes:82590 (80.6 KiB)

You see that the IP addressed has changed. /etc/network/interface remains the same. I have access to the net and can stream music for instance.

A possible network complication is that I am running "pdnsd", a caching DNS proxy server, since I have satellite Internet access where a DNS request can take 2 seconds.

I want a static IP address for accessing my machine by name from the other machines on my home network. I put the name and IP address in /etc/hosts. (I admit that I don't know how to configure my DHCP (router) server and or network to provide that functionality.) Previously, I have had no problems specifying a static IP under Mint 13. I normally only reboot when I update the kernel but suspend my system several time each day.

Any suggestion will be most welcome.

Thanks in Advance,
Don

I'm sorry rozen that I can't help you.
This is a very specific issue, but if you can come up with e simple scenario so I could reproduce your error, I might be able to help you.
