Wicd & Static IP

Postby kwisher » 16 May 2013 13:21

For some reason when I set my static IP settings in the Wicd GUI. The settings will stick for the current session but will not remain persistent after a reboot. The settings are still present after a reboot but I receive a DHCP IP instead of my static IP.

TIA
The instructions suggested Windows XP or better, so I installed Linux :)

I can't believe nobody has a solution to this problem??

What I ended up doing was removing the Wicd application and hard coding my static IP info into /etc/network/interfaces.

Sorry, I totally missed your post, but I think I would have proposed the old-fashioned way as well: editing the interfaces file, or purge wicd in favor of networkmanager.

So is this a distro specific problem or a Wicd problem? I haven't used Wicd very much as networkmanager is usually the default.

I don't know personally: I don't use static IP's, and I don't use any other distributions then SolydXK.

So are you not going to try to solve this issue in your distro? I can't be the only one who uses a static IP.

Unfortunately I'm the only developer, and maintainer at the moment.
Issues are ordered by priority, and this is not disturbing the working of the systems, nor does it affect many people (or we already should have heard from them here in this thread).
With these kind of issues, I can only solve them quickly when the community gives the solution, I'm afraid.

Why can't we just use networkmanager by default? Is there something wrong with it? I was kind of surprised at Wicd, I thought networkmanager was the standard.... :D

Wicd was the choice of the community when the unofficial LMDE Xfce came into existence, and I like to believe that the community drives the products with their choices. I'm merely here to facilitate, and guard that the choices are in line with our goals.

adding to what Schoelje said above, wicd "seems" more stable and less glitchy than n-m and the overall impression is that it does better what it does when compared to n-m.

has limitations (like all software have) but for example one that is already identified (mobile broadband support) is scheduled to 2.0 version.

in the end of the day, n-m is available and is matter of swapping to it if wicd doesn't cut it, same as in so many other distros users have to do exactly the opposite :P
