SolydX Wic'd and VPN (solved)

Postby donki68 » 23 May 2013 18:26

I am not very familiar with Wic'd, but does anyone know how to set up a PPTP VPN with it? I looked up VPNs on Debian in Google, but everything I found was rather involved.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

hello donki68 :) welcome to SolydXK forum
yeahh, i found an howto that is also a bit complex
http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... 29281.html
in the end of the day if you have a specific need for this option maybe installing network-manager is a better option

I agree.
About half a year ago, I needed VPN on my university. I had to replace Wicd with Network Manager.
You need to remove Wicd: they cannot co-exist.

Thank you zerozero. Wow that is a little complex. Afraid I may break my system if I try that one (I am not a complete newb, but very close). ;)

Schoelje,
I did try to replace wicd with network-manager. When I rebooted network-manager came up but said that there was no active connections. Odd thing was that I was connected to the network, ifconfig showed IP info, and I could surf the web.
I am sure I did something wrong. Do you remember how you did it before?

Thanks

FYI,You really have done an awesome job on SolydX. I installed it an old Dell Optiplex 210L for a teenager, and she was of to the races even though she had never seen Linux before.

Make sure you have these installed:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn
sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc
Then click on the NM widget in your tray, and click "Manage Connections".
Click on the VPN tab, and Add a VPNC connection, and fill in the credentials.
VPNC is used for Cisco based networks, which in most cases is the most likely to work.

It's odd that you have a connection, but it doesn't show.
Check if this returns anything:

Code: Select all

apt search wicd | grep ^i
If it does, you need to purge them.
Reboot if you did need to purge anything wicd related.

It's good to hear that people without Linux experience are getting used to SolydX that quickly.

I removed wicd and install network-manager, did reboot, and did the "apt search wicd | grep ^i" command (nothing was found).

I still have the same problem. I can surf, ipconfig shows a valid IP from the network, but network-manager says "No valid active connections found!". The VPN entry will not work either (using PPTP, which I did install that network-manager plugin).

I did look this up on Google and I can find some really old references to this problem on Ubuntu 8.10, but nothing more recent.

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas.
Let's hope somebody else has.

network-manager-pptp (0.9.4.0-2)
network-manager-pptp-gnome (0.9.4.0-2)
network-manager-vpnc (0.9.4.0-1)

usb-modeswitch-data (20120815-2)
vpnc (0.5.3r512-2)
vpnc-scripts (0.1~git20120602-2)
2- purge wicd (you have already done this)

Code: Select all

Completely removed the following packages:
python-wicd
wicd
wicd-daemon
wicd-gtk
3- install n-m-gnome

Code: Select all

found this in an old Ubuntu forum for 11.04, and that fixed the issue.

sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

change the line managed=false to managed=true

Save, stop and start network manager:

sudo service network-manager restart

Thanks for feedback.

Re: SolydX Wic'd and VPN (not solved in newest distro)

Postby hirdel » 27 Sep 2013 17:50

Hallo dear programmers

first want to say I am very pleased with this new distro, thanx a lot for doing a very very good job !!!
I use it since 07/2013 on a virtual machine and network works well still today.
Three days ago I downloaded the very new iso x64 and installed it on a real machine, but got the same error which was mentioned in this thread. I tried several hours to solve - but get no info if webaccess is ok. So I also tried with new iso x32 with same results.

After I found this thread, it was still easy to solve.

Just want to point out this problem still exists, may be in newer to come relesase the fix could be included. That would be nice for newbies.

Thanx
