Problem enabling wi-fi in Solydx live.

Postby starcross1 » 30 Oct 2017 18:44

I am hoping to install SolydX on a partition. I have a running version of LMDE on another partition so I am fairly sure that the hardware is compatible but the Network Manager icon is greyed out. I have tried iwlist wlan0 scan which finds my router. I have run iwconfig and entered the appropriate essid and key. I have created a wi-fi connection with the network manager for wlan0. However the manager icon remains greyed out and a left click indicates the device is not ready.

I could install without an internet connection - no ethernet is available at this machine in its current location - but I'd rather not. Any suggestions would be gratefully received bearing mind that I have to read them outside the Solydx on the DVD and carry them in as it were.. Thanks.

Please post the output of "inxi -FNzxx" - you can do thta from inside Lubuntu, you might have to install inxi first.

Code: Select all

D-Link System DWA-130 802.11n Wireless N Adapter(rev.E) [Realtek RTL8191SU]
was supported in jessie but is not supported in stretch anymore - see https://packages.debian.org/de/stretch/firmware-realtek. I don't know why - probably too old? So SolydX8 will work, SolydX9 not.

Other people, mostly on Ubuntu, reported similar problems for the newest 'buntu versions. It involves installing drivers from git repositories. Since I haven't tried myself I can't advise you on it - just don't try to install from a ppa, that will sooner or later damage your system. PPAs are for 'buntu only. I don't have enough time to search the internet for the device atm, so you'll have to do it yourself. If this is an USB dongle it might get hard to find a solution suitable for debian. I have been unsuccessful in the past.

Maybe someone else knows more.

Just in case I'm wrong and there is a suitable driver (and the problem lies elsewhere), try the command again from within SolydX. Copy the output into a file so you can post it from Manjaro.

Thanks for the insight. I had tried to install debian 9 and run into wireless issues there so I think you are right. The solution, such as it is seems to be to update the hardware and get a newer card/dongle. Thanks again.
