Forgot password? cannot use password? How to reset

Postby wayne » 06 Mar 2013 05:06

Sometime, when you forgot the password, or you think you remember correctly but you still cannot login using the 'correct password', then you may have to reset the password.

These are the steps I used, propably need some others to confirm it works in Solyd.

1. Boot computer, wait for grub2 boot menu to show up.
2. On grub2 menu, use arrow key to scroll to the line for 'recovery mode',
usually this is the second line on the grub2 boot menu, when your grub2 is version 1.99-xx.
Then press 'e' and hit Enter key.
3. A text windows should pop-up. Use arrow key to scroll down to a line that start with linux /boot , which would looks like this
linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-.... root=uuid-xxxxxx ro single
4. move arrow to end of the linux line, delete ( with Backspace key) the ro single
5. type in rw init=/bin/bash, so the linux line would read:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-.... root=uuid-xxxxxx rw init=/bin/bash
6. hit ctrl-x or F10 to boot computer
7. it should boot to a password-less root shell that end with something like
(none) / #
8. Type in this command, with your_login_name and hit Enter key
passwd your_login_name
9.It will prompt you to enter new UNIX password, key in your new password, and Retype the same password when prompted second time
10. it should then show you
passwd: password updated successfully

11. Now you can power off computer, Power on again, and proceed to login with new password.

Hope this helps

Wayne, thank you for writing this, and I'm sorry for taking so long to test this  . On SolydK 64-bit, there were two differences from the instructions (which I think apply to all editions). The first is once you select recovery mode in grub, you have to press "e" to get the pop-up window. The other was in step 8, I think the command is:

Code: Select all

passwd your_login_name
The difference being passwd vs password.

Is there a similar way to change your username?
