HOW TO: Add Emerald to XFCE Compiz

Postby GeneC » 14 May 2013 22:35

EDIT: Jan 30, 2014
Seems this is no longer viable in Debian. Repo is down.

===============

Using Compiz with XFCE and want to be able to change/customize Window Borders?
You can do it with Emerald

What is Emerald?
HERE
The Emerald Theme Manager allows you to install, edit and switch between Emerald themes. In order for it to work, select Emerald as your window decorator. You will also need to enable the Window Decorations plugin (via CCSM).
If your interested some backgound info.
Reference info-(click)

============================

1. Add this repo.

Code: Select all

deb http://jas.gemnetworks.com/debian debian main
deb-src http://jas.gemnetworks.com/debian debian main
NOTE: (for 64bit) use this

Code: Select all

deb [arch=amd64] http://jas.gemnetworks.com/debian debian main
deb-src [arch=amd64] http://jas.gemnetworks.com/debian debian main

2. Add the KEY

Code: Select all

wget http://jas.gemnetworks.com/jasmineaura.gpg.key -O- | sudo apt-key add -

3. Install Emerald

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install emerald
4. Remove (or comment out) this repo after installing Emerald.

5. Get some Themes.

Mint has some basic theme packages.
http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main ... ia_all.deb
http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main ... ia_all.deb

Or get your own.
Get Emerald Themes-HERE

Personally I would NOT upgrade to the newer Compiz in the jas.gemnetworks.com repo. The older version from Debian seems to have more features.

If anyone sees any errors, (or)
If anyone tries this and has any problems, please post, and we'll figure it out and edit tutorial

Thanks.

Fix is HERE

looks good overall :)

just a small correction
i don't think it will work in i386

Yes, sorry about that. I only made amd64 builds for the repo. Soon, after I re-fork (properly) as "matepiz", I intend to have both amd64 and i386 builds available through the repo.
(which he never did)

the workaround
art7ir wrote: There is a second little problem, namely that apt-get is complaining like

Code: Select all

$ W: Failed to fetch http://jas.gemnetworks.com/debian/dists/debian/InRelease Unable to find expected entry 'main/binary-i386/Packages' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
To get rid of this warning message, simply state in your sources.list explicitly that you are using only the amd64 architecture (regarding this repo):

Code: Select all

deb [arch=amd64] http://jas.gemnetworks.com/debian debian main
deb-src [arch=amd64] http://jas.gemnetworks.com/debian debian main
that you mention above solves the issue telling apt that this is an amd64 arch

====
thinking about it if we specify [arch=i386] maybe we could fool apt because of this multiarch mess
(but this is wildly untested)
bliss of ignorance

Yep. We need a 32bit user to test this...

Being multi-arch won't it work for both with the 64bit repo?

Looks great to me.

Edit: FWIW, using SID + Compiz + Cairo Open GL ( and intel graphics) seem unstable at the moment. (X has restarted about once an hour). Wondering if others see the same thing. However the xfce wm is flawless.

Edit: Replace Cairo with docky... so far so good. (SID + Compiz + Docky)
Edit: Full day with Docky and no problems. (SID + Compiz + Docky)

I see your right.... :o

https://gemnetworks.com/
website temporarily down for maintenance. please check back later.
I would not count on it being back soon (or ever)... ;)

Compiz and Emerald are hit or miss in Debian for a while now. (And not really worth the effort).. :|
You could try to compile from souce with this how to from last July.. Not sure if its still viable.

Nope! A dependency is not available it seems

Code: Select all

gene@debian:~$ sudo apt-get install intltool build-essential libxrender-dev libgtk2.0-dev libwnck-dev libdecoration0-dev libwnck1.0-cil-dev git autoconf libtool gawk
[sudo] password for gene:
