HOW TO: SolydX Japanese Language Support and IME

Installing Japanese Language Support and Input Method Editor (IME) for SolydX 64 Version 20130715

1. Install Japanese language support for XFCE

at the terminal type:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
1a. scroll down with arrow key to:
ja_JP.UTF-8 UTF-8
1b. Add locales by pressing [space-bar]
1c. Press [tab] to select <OK>
1d. Arrow up or down to select your default locale and press [enter]

Output on terminal:

Code: Select all

Generating locales (this might take a while)...
  en_AU.UTF-8... done
  en_US.UTF-8... done
  ja_JP.UTF-8... done
Generation complete.
2. Install IBus Input Method Editor (IME)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install ibus
3. Install ibus-anthy for Japanese support

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install ibus-anthy
4. Install mecab for Japanese support

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mecab
5. Configure ibus settings
Settings > IBus Preferences

5a. At the General Tab:
i. Tick "Show input method name on language bar" Checkbox

5b. At the Input Method Tab:
i. Tick "Customize active input methods" Checkbox
ii. Press [Tab] and arrow down so that "Anthy appears on the Drop Down Box
or Click on the Drop Down box then Click on the ">" next to the greyed out text which says "Japanese" then select "Anthy"
iii. Click the [+Add] Button and "Japanese-Anthy" should appear in the Input Method Field

5c. At the Advanced Tab
i. Tick "Share the same input method among all applications" Checkbox
ii. Click the [x Close] Button

6. Configure Input Method Switcher
Settings > Input Method Switcher
i. Click on the "Use IBus (ibus)" Radio Button
ii. Click the [OK] Button

7. Logout and Log back in, or Reboot if necessary

8. Test using mousepad editor, vim, bash, firefox, abiword, etc.
  Press <CNTRL> + Space to change between the input type as defined in IBus Preferences.

Testing in Terminal:
