Device Driver Manager (DDM) - help needed [upd:20-10-15]

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 13 Feb 2013 21:33

Device Driver Manager: a third party hardware driver manager

[Updated: 20 October 2015]

DDM is now available in the new SolydXK repository.
Make sure this line is in your /etc/apt/sources.list:

Code: Select all

deb http://repository.solydxk.com/ solydxk main upstream import testing
and run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ddm
If you prefer, you can download it directly here: http://repository.solydxk.nl/pool/testing/d/ddm/

WARNING
I have no way of testing this myself. So, I had to simulate the hardware which obviously is not the same as testing it on real hardware. Before you start, create a testing environment (multiboot), or at least create a system image. You can use CloneZilla.

I'm looking for testers:
  • Systems with Nvidia, ATI, Intel, Broadcom or multi-processor 32-bit CPU's.
  • Other hardware that you would like to have supported by DDM.
After installation, open up a terminal:

Code: Select all

ddm
This will create a debug file:

Code: Select all

/var/log/ddm.log
Save the log file for each test and rename the log file. When you're done, post back here and attach the log files with a description of what you tested.

The actual installing and removing is done by bash scripts.
If you know some bash scripting, you can adapt this file:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/install-drivers
To get help on the parameters you can use, type:

Code: Select all

sudo install-driver -h
.

All source is available at GitHub:https://github.com/SolydXK/device-driver-manager

So you see: you don't need to be a Linux crack to help out!
Your help is very much appreciated!

SolydXK needs you!

@GeneC

I cannot seem to reproduce your issue: I did a clean install and ran DDM to install my Nvidia drivers. It did so without any issue.
Can you do something for me?

On your now correctly configured system:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install debconf-utils
sudo debconf-get-selections | grep nvidia > debconf-nvidia.seed
and post debconf-nvidia.seed here.

i though i would let you know that unfortunately i won't be able to test ddm any further
one week(ish) before we start this amazing adventure i decided to revamp all my hardware:
- gave the lappy with the broadcom chipset away
- the main (and now only) comp is as follow

Code: Select all

you see here 2 main diff from vanilla solydK install:
- liquorix kernel because of the nasty freeze sandybridge bug with kernel 3.2.x

Nice machine, but a shame you got rid of your old one.
Well, as far as I can see, there are no major bugs (except for GeneC's issue, but if he comes up with the .seed file, I'll probably have that fixed soon ;) ). Somehow I think there is more than enough for you left to do

Here it is =

Code: Select all

nvidia-support	nvidia-support/check-running-module-version	boolean	true

nvidia-support	nvidia-support/create-nvidia-conf	boolean	true
# Run "nvidia-installer --uninstall"?
nvidia-installer-cleanup	nvidia-installer-cleanup/uninstall-nvidia-installer	boolean	true
I see a couple of 'errors' there, but don't know what they mean?

PS.
"Notify me when a reply is posted" is not selected by default. Perhaps it should be??

"ZZ"... :D
Nice new computer. Quite a "HOT_ROD"... :P
I just upgraded from 6GB to 12GB or RAM. Unbelievable had cheap RAM has gotten ($45US for 8GB)...

I've updated ddm:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ddm
It'll state that ddm can't be authenticated.
I don't know (yet) how to solve that, but I'm working on it.
Something to do with gpg and authenticating the packages.

Isn't the authentication issue solved by just installing solydxk-keyring ?

Code: Select all

gene@solydx:~$ apt-cache policy solydxk-keyring
solydxk-keyring:
  Installed: 2013.02.15
  Candidate: 2013.02.15

        500 http://packages.solydxk.com/ solydxk/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
I installed it AFTER upgrading DDM, so can't say for sure...

inconsistent info from DDM with compaq-legacy ATI

Postby wayne » 03 Mar 2013 15:31

This is a test run on old compaq presario.. 10 yo, and still going strong

It has a legacy amd card. ATI RV280 [Radeon 9200]

I upgrade kernel to -pae, using normal method with synaptic, no issue.

wayne@solydxcompaq:~$ inxi -F

Code: Select all

System: Host solydxcompaq Kernel 3.2.0-4-686-pae i686 (32 bit) Distro SolydXK 1 debian

Info: Processes 147 Uptime 21 min Memory 309.0/1263.9MB Runlevel 2 Client Shell inxi 1.4.23

From smxi script, it reports something like below.. not exact words but go enough in summary:

the card is too old, no driver for it, you have no option to installer ati driver.
you must use radeon driver

I have not attempt to install fglrx. But of course fglrx and the rest of its dependencies are in the repos..

Now, all I am going to do is see how DDM process 'works' on this legacy card.

When I ran DDM, it said fglrx is available, and so let try and install.
it went on to install, I can read all steps were executed on screen, and it completed the process, no error was reported.

Reboot, oh well, graphic is still there

Now, test results:
1. Welcome screen
I click Drivers, and it shows
a. AMD ATI RV280 (Radeon 9200) Installed : fglrx-driver (1.12)
b. PAE capable system Installed linux-headers-3.2.0-4-686-pae (3.2.35)

so from reading it seems fglrx is installed

2. on terminal, check fglrx status
wayne@solydxcompaq:~$ fglrxinfo

Code: Select all

X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12
wayne@solydxcompaq:~$ lsmod | grep fglrx
nothing showed here, it means no fglrx module was loaded.

a successful fglrx installation would show fglrx module loaded
wayne@solydxcompaq:~$ fgl_glxgears

Code: Select all

Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12
so it is very clear the fglrx is not working

3. check on terminal with apt-cache policy fglrx*, showing installed

wayne@solydxcompaq:~$ apt-cache policy fglrx*

Code: Select all

in summary
1. Inconsistent between Welcome screen status and DDM screen status
2. no check were done to screen out unsupported, legacy amd card ( like smxi method of screening and alert )
so installation process went ahead but it should not proceed if checking was done properly..
the fortunate thing for this case is, graphic is still working...

That is my test information
Hopeful it is useful for DDM development.

doesn't DDM installs the drivers with DKMS? i have a vague idea that it does. if it does, liquorix is the problem, it doesn't support DKMS.
bliss of ignorance

No, it's a bug in DDM...working on that right now.

Wow, I never knew that. What does liquorix use as an alternative (assuming it has one)?

MAYBL8, it's good to have ATI testers 8-) . It seems DDM still needs some work on ATI/AMD cards, so testers are important (and it seems a large number of people have intel and NVIDIA cards).

I've uploaded a new version of DDM in testing: 0.5.9
This should have fixed your issue, and improved hardware detection speed a bit.

I got the upgrade (although it doesn't affect me much). Would you benefit from any of my logs? I have bumblebee and optimus, so I can't really install any drivers using it, but I can open it and have it detect things...

Re: Device Driver Manager (DDM) - help needed

Postby MAYBL8 » 18 Mar 2013 21:06

Schoelje,
Thanks for the 0.5.9 update. That did allow me to install the ATI/AMD video driver.
However, (isn't there always a however) I have dual monitors somehow during my trying to get the correct driver installed I have the AMD Catalyst Control Center installed and it says when I go to run it ;
There was a problem initializing the Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. No AMD graphics driver is installed or the driver is not functioning properly.
I have used this utility in the past to set up my dual monitors.
Is there something else I should be using.
Sorry to be such a pain but hopefully others will benefit.
Thanks
Dan

If you need more info let me know.

Update:
I just used the Display Monitor from the systemsettings and that got me configured.
Guess I can uninstall the AMD utility.

I have no experience with ATI graphics, but can you use arandr to set up your monitors? If you're using kde, it has its own display tool.

Edit: never mind, just saw your update.
